What ship will you be most intrigued to finally walk around?

So what. Its the possible gameplay that comes with it is what we are talking about surely. We are not talking about the bugs in different games, it is irrelevant.

No, I don't think it is happening soon either, and wouldn't want it to happen soon, as I would want it done right. Not sure what your game engine remark means, but the Cobra engine is perfectly capable of doing first/third person gameplay. No engine limitations there at all.

Maybe, but I bet my butt that it would bloat the hardware requirements to top levels.

This in no way rebuts my comment, Horizons was entirely in line with my posited incremental steps model. It started very bear-bones and has gradually increased in complexity and feature density.

Also, point of order, Elite is not all about the ships. It's a rather arcady space game that currently only has ships as a method for interacting with the game. From my understanding Fdev had always wanted, if not promised, that the possible mediums for interaction would expand. Space legs, at least, are a concrete Kickstarter promise, and that will need to interact with existing game mechanics to satisfying.

Elite isn't all about space ships? Man... What have I missed in Elite, Frontier, First Encounters?

Elite is about what the devs want it to be, and you've obviously missed the episode elite dangerous : horizons.
Anyway, we're all stubborn here and this is becoming quite tiresome.

Why would FPP gameplay bloat the hardware requirements out. Sorry, I just don't understand why that would. I don't see other game FPP games suffer like that. NMS seems to be able to cope perfectly fine on a PS4, why would it struggle for ED?.

+1, considering you already have basic characters, animations, and the world still exists outside of you and your ship... It's basically another camera, closer to the ground (level of details anybody, that we already have?) and slower, with a different field of view maybe...
The most intricate part is the gameplay but then again, lots of possibilities other than turning it into a shooter.

NMS doesn't have the same fidelity. Especially not on PS4.

Going to a smaller perspective would include requiring more detailed textures and such? And more of them? There is not really a need for wall, floor and whatnottextures when we fly in space. Probably more shaders, surfaces to compute. More occlusion. More code to load and unload stuff. Lighting.

Do you think this would come for free?

Folderal!

.....

As an example, 1 tonne of Hydrogen uses 11,976 cubic meters (rounded to the nearest whole number) of volume at one atmosphere of pressure. A stock AspX has a 32 tonne tank, meaning it uses 383,225 cubic meters of volume just to store fuel. Even at 10,000 PSI of compression, this is still 18,249 cubic meters of volume used and that is only for fuel.

I assume it would be stored as liquid hydrogen (density 70.8 kg/m3) so 1 tonne is around 14m3? 32 tonnes is around 450m3. A cube around 7.5m per side. Should be doable? :)

Back on topic, I want to wander round my cutter. The bars are quite well stocked, so some R&R would seem to be in order!

NMS has pretty good textures, it's just not the same style as ED, that is all. And when you talk about close up details, that is what LOD is for, it will render the stuff close up in detail, anything further away will be low res, just like what we have now in ED. It will just be another LOD layer. As stated, other games seem to be fine, why would it be different for ED. Sorry, but you arguments just don't stack up. If anything there could be less stuff to load as we are much closer to the ground, we can't see as far.

I doubt it is so simply and easy like you make it seem. Atm you only see the outside surfaces. Once you start looking inside objects, buildings, ships the number of surfaces is going to skyrocket. I guess ppl envision legs to be something else than just EVA suit like in "X" franchise.

The COBRA engine is quite powerful; Planet Coaster is built entirely on it and they handle character animation (with legs) just fine.
People envision a lot more than just EVA'ing; David Braben himself envisions an Elite that allows you to land on a distant ELW and go hunting.

I think a lot of people will be besides themselves to walk around the Cobra MkIII. It's the game's cover-girl, after all.

I know I will... heck, I'd be fine with only having the Sidey and Cobra for a time if it also means we get spacewalking and manual ship repears in first person!

The clipper / cutter would be my favourites, the clipper should feel special but purposeful where as the cutter should be so ostentatious to be decadent - I mean come on - it has stained / iridescent glass flanks on the the sides of the fueslage, what other treasures will it have hidden in its interior?

I like to think of that windowed hump on the topside of the Gutamaya Cutter as either a very restricted VIP Lounge or a Captain's Lounge/Cabin and look forward to the possibility of exploring it one day. I picture a VIP Lounge as a gaudy, beyond luxurious bar & entertainment space right on top of the ship. Imagine the views out those windows in Supercruise drive. As a Captain's Cabin it would of course also be luxurious (also with a bar) office and living space but possibly also with a secondary control station that could override the controls on the main bridge. [arrrr] Would love to drive the ship from there . . .

It would be very interesting to see how FDev handles the interiors and large volumes of the big ships, what sorts of rooms, cabins there would be, how many decks, the engineering spaces, passenger cabins and how that might all change when refitting for cargo or exploration for instance, if one strips a ship for jump-range, when walking around the interior of the ship, what does one see? Empty "module slot" spaces, with giant waldoes to grab and hold modules in place?

I want to be able to walk around and experience the interior volumes of the different ship's bridges as I have always felt the bridges and cockpits of the ships were all unnecessarily large and holding an unnecessarily large and potentially unsafe volume of atmosphere. I want to see what all that extra space is being used for. Tables? Beds? The ship's Head? The hot-tub? o7
