Should Military Ascension Missions Be A Bit More..... Military?

I've just made Post Commander in the Federation, and Baron in the (filthy!) Empire.

Yet, except for my last mission, I don't recall what any of my previous rank ascension missions were. They've all been so "meh" they blend in with the rest of the missions I was doing.
My last rank up mission was simply deliver 11t of hydrogen to a station 4ly away.
Not particularly exciting or memorable.

So, should these ascension missions be more military based?
Such as massacre missions, assassination missions (especially deserter ones), surface assaults (not the easy kind!), etc etc?
Ideally that get progressively difficult the higher rank you go.
At the very least, these trade runs should be high risk, guaranteed interdictions and scan avoidance.

I know some of you don't like combat, but then it's the military you're signing up for... Lol

Agree. edit: with OP, not the "moar victims"

I was fed up with "...we have a covert extremely sensitive operation, go get us 7 tones of Farming Equipment".

Navy missions should indeed more navy related.. not hauling biowaste.

just like gaing navy rep should be gained by other means.
federation improve security by hunting those wanted peeps.
empire improving economy by shipping slaves.

IIRC, back in the early game (first few months, when we also had less ranks) you could haul your way up to rank 3-4 and after that you had an assassination mission. Couldn't skip it. (or it was only my bad luck. I was a harmless trader back then)

Can someone confirm this, please?

But those 7 tones of "Farming Equipment" aided in destabilizing a regime that was unfavorable at the time. Someone was unhappy they had a shovel full of ... oh nevermind carry on.

Some military ranking missions should involve PVP a player aligned to a rival powerplay faction.

:D

I'd think forced PvP encounters to 'level up' is a bit much.

Although I do agree that hauling farm equipment 6ly to reach status of King was a bit of a surprise.

Maybe they thought that I king should not fell that hauling farm equipment or biowaste is beneath them...

Whole game is lacking a proper military system tbh.

I remember in FE2, yeah, you couriered messages, blank military cards, top secret documents etc for a while... some attracted a tail... then you moved onto assasination missions in enemy territory (eg. Assassination in Fed space if Imperial, and vice versa)... after that you moved onto surveillance missions which were pretty high risk (energy bombs fixed that for you though!), and lastly onto bombing missions.

This so far... yeah... you ship some farm equipment or find some beer a few times and boom... King/Post Commander.

Powerplay would've been a pretty good hook to kick off military careers in Elite with specific procedurally generated missions into enemy territories, but that was a missed opportunity in favour of a single, grindy activity for doing something.

haha yeah probably!

Advisor: Emperor, sir. We have heard that there's a tractor broken down on P47-YV
Emperor: What? AGAIN?
Advisor: Yes sir, this time the yellow one.
Emperor: Well send someone out there to fix it.
Advisor: But sir, I asked already, and no one wants to fly out there with spare parts.
Emperor: No one?
Advisor: No one sir. Not even one of the slaves from Eravate.
Emperor: OK fine. Promote whoever does it..
Advisor: Sir? For hauling agricultural spares?
Emperor: YES... I DON'T CARE. I just want that yellow tractor working.
Advisor: Yes sir, understood.

....Meanwhile....

Notice: Promotion for anyone who takes some screw drivers to P47-YV

Vorxian: Heh, I'll take that thank you very much.

...4 minutes later...

Military doesn't just mean shooting people.
Intelligence gathering, covert ops, logistics, bandsmen ;) - all of these are 'military' tasks and are therefore viable for ascension missions.

In a more fully developed military progression system it could/would/should be possible to specialize in any of these fields.

Military operations aren't exclusively combat. Look at the Berlin Airlift. It was just transporting goods to a blockaded city. Troops are involved in search and rescue and disaster response.

It could be a bit more varied, but it's still reasonable to ship 4 tons of beer to a base.

<edit> I was a member of a disaster response team and went on a search and rescue mission that ultimately became a recovery mission. I've been on many a transport with supplies as well as troops. Some of those items were kegs of beer. </edit>

I get that non-combat military missions are a thing. But they should atleast attempt to hide the bog standard delivery missioms behind some sort of fluff, and make them feel a bit more special...?

Unlocking a military rank gives you auxiliary rank (which is what you are, not a regular).

As an auxiliary, you will get all the crap jobs and IRL, auxiliary/reserves don't get the new stuff to play w/.

That being said, there should be a path to regular military rank. If such a path were to be available, you would probably have to surrender a portion of your auxiliary rank. Then earn real military rank and military goods/services/equipment on the way up.

It will never happen. But speculation is free.

The entire military ranking process is in dire need of a complete and total overhaul. Its grindy, non-sensical garbage at the moment.

Yes to both.

And - at least as far as I know - FDev has acknowledged this fact and is planning to implement a dedicated military career some time in the future.

Personally, I believe that this 'some time' migth be earlier than expected. I really think, those new missions will be part of the promised "season" 3 base mechanic overhaul. It would also fit nicely into the whole Thargoid conflict context, wouldn't it?

The only issue I have with it is, that I plan to be Rear Admiral at this point. I don't know, if I am willing to reset my save (again) just to experience the military part.
Thus, I deliberately hold myself back ranking up wih the Empire. I am afraid, I will have to subscribe in their salve owner-protecting navy, when the time comes ... *urgh!*.
My only hope: An Alliance, that joins in to the concert with its own navy, ranks and - maybe - even ships!

My personal favorites (from over a year ago) were my Federation promotion missions that involved hauling 6 tons of beer to a Fed outpost for a party. And of course, beer was illegal in this system.

So you want me to haul illegal goods to a party held by the authorities? lol

That happened several times - beer, wine, and tobacco.
