The current builds of the game lack too many needed resources to play any kind of "Old School" approach without wasting tons of game time looking for ships, modules, resources, trade routes etc. etc. etc.
If you want to forgo all of the excellent third party resources out there that take up this slack, knock yourselves out. But in my opinion, that is a very inefficient way to approach playing this game.
And yet that is exactly how I've played since day one...I use no out of game resources at all...none. Everything I've learned and picked up has been done the hard way...made lots of mistakes, learned from them and adapted accordingly.
With what is now closing in on 1900 hours total playtime, I gotta say I have never once been even remotely tempted to use any of them.
Ive ignored rngeers since they landed...not one single modification on anything and none of them unlocked...have decided to do them now. I might browse through the forums fer bits n pieces but by and large, if I can't master them ingame without using external sources of information, then I personally don't think they worth learning at all.
Ive figured out most things without too much stress...fairly sure I'll achieve the same with rngeers. I got a hold full of mats I have no other use fer and last night hit the limit on data with 500 pieces of silver to feed into the slot machines.
And some people seem to think they genuinely old school? Pff
