Elite on PS4 is getting some pretty darn good reviews

I completely agree with this entire statement, i'd rep it but apparently i can't so soon.

I would add that as an Xbox one player i never thought i'd see a game like this on a console, i'd never played a space sim before but i knew it was my thing because i remember watching my dad play the older games on PC. So i'd also like to thank frontier for making the best console game that i have ever played.

Its a novelty fer me...Ive been playing this niche genre of games fer 30 years. I was an admin fer 2 years on one the best freelancer servers in europe and sunk my first marriage because of it...7 years in eve where one got to put the wax lyrical skills to good use infiltrating corps and being horrible to people in low sec...6 years as a cylon dedicated to destroying all organic life using any and all means.

I did all that on pc...even started this game on pc. But Ive been a multi platform gamer as long as consoles have existed right back to playing tennis on the one game only atari 2600 from the early 80s. The novelty being that after the pc packed in, I found the game actually ran better on the bone than it did on my old pc. Although I got seriously torn to shreds when I pointed this out at the time. That aside, Im an xbone only player now and Im lovin the game again after a timeout.

I do miss the hotas though...hurry up microsoft and make it happen ^

Hehe Verm we have a remarkably similar gaming history. Elite in the late 80's on my speecy and early 90's my Amiga. Jumpgate, then Eve; god I was addicted to EVE. Played that from beta until about 2010! Mostly ditched PC for a long time because of the constant upgrade expense compared to consoles became unsustainable.

Mate if the funds become available or the technology goes more mainstream you need to try VR.... I've blown way too much money on it, but a HOTAS + VR + ED = a dream come true.

This game is a masterpiece, and PS owner git into it at a more accomplished stage. Also, the depth is vastly greater than that if the average console game.

I'm on holiday, hut even after 8 weeks of playing time, I cannot wait to hear 'ship released' again. :)

What do you expect, despite this game being pretty basic and nothing more than a pvp meta hell hole, it is still something different from the usual generic stuff that comes out on consoles and would no doubt of got some attention.

It wasn't hard.... but what worries me, is this the green light for FDev to continue to this shambolic mess of a game in the direction they have been taking it? I hope to God not... because if this is the summit of their ambition and the realisation of the potential this game has someone seriously needs to go find a new job.

My partner was keen to try it. 5 minutes into the docking tutorial she was like "THIS ISN'T FUN" and pretty much rage-quit. It's not an unusual reaction
Elite Dangerous' main problem is it's marketing. It's trying to sell itself as a space game for everybody, when in reality it's half space *simulator*, and as such requires a lot more perseverance than many people can manage.

What!!!! The game doesn't even know what it is.... It is called dangerous, but too many people cry like children on the forums that their;

Repair costs are too high.
Credit per hour too low.
Can't get an Anaconda within a week.
Fuel costs too much.
Ship jump ranges is too low.
Too much effort is required.
They want piracy to be done with zero consequence or danger, because the game is sandbox and I should be able to do what I want
They want trading to be done with zero consequence or danger, because the game is sandbox and they should be able to do what they want
They want exploring to be done with zero consequence or danger, because the game is sandbox and they should be able to do what they want
They want to rank with all factions, because they are whiny little children who only care about themselves rather than the game as a whole, because it is clear with a 0.0000000000001% increase in common sense levels it's easy to see that all the major factions hate each other and ranking within multiple factions is a joke and should never in a month of Sundays should have been allowed to happen.
They want their FDL OP super kill explorer ship to be able to travel 60,000 light years, because FDL's were designed for deep space exploration, but that's okay, with the "I am a whiny child" brigade as FDev will pander to them religiously, thus making a mockery of explorer class ships... And the best explorer ships in the game are not even the explorer ships.
..... And the list goes on and on and on....

Fdev have pandered to much to whiny crying little children on the forums and moved away from the sensible, gritty dangerous universe where players actions come with consequences to make and Elite universe that feels alive and makes sense....

It shocking what has happened to this game and it was supposed to be a simulator, but it hasn't got a foggy what the hell it is now though, other than a laughable joke to anyone who isn't willing to settle for third rate uninspired gunk as good or even acceptable.

I hate to be the one showing the other side here, but ED is not doing well on player reviews on Amazon.

37% are 1-star reviews, and the complaints are what I would expect: bugs, connection issue but mostly the difficult learning curve and lack of orientation.
I can entirely understand, and I am not surprised to see more people playing and losing interest almost immediately, rather than spending (a lot of) time until it starts making some sense. I know I did it because I love flying, love space exploration and recognized the potential, but it took me a week just to figure out how to dock/undock and probably a month to configure the controllers and understand basics (I am a slow learner I guess).

I don't own a ps4 or Xbox, but coming from the PC I almost lost friends by convincing them to buy and play. I got to the point of gifting ED when there was a Steam promotion... no joy: a few will enjoy it; most will hate it, makes sense for me. But I think FD has abysmal communication skills, and people are buying this probably thinking its Star Wars Battlefront or something. Of course, on FD defense, things have improved a lot in recent patches, the tutorials too.

Of course, on FD defense, things have improved a lot over the past patches, the tutorials too. They just need to make it clearer, so people won't feel disappointed.

When looking at user scores, always dismiss all one and five star reviews.

But if you sell it as a simulator, the real simulator fans will buy and hate it. If you can cobtrol your spaceship with a gamepad, its just not a simulator.

This can be improved by adding the digital manual in the in-game menu for casual gamers. They need more guidance to learn how to play.

I never said it was a simulation, I said it was half a simulation! Elite Dangerous falls half way between an arcade game & a simulation so I use the term "arcade simulation". (If you hate this term, then feel free to invent your own.)

FDev's marketing department don't even TRY to convey this in their sales pitches (apart from a few VERY early videos), hence a lot of disgruntled customers who didn't read the reviews (beyond the overall score & the word "spaceship").

While i agree in most of what you ranted about,

Fed-Imp naval ranks make literally no sense:

you get no navy rank increase from supporting the feds/imps in conflict zones ( combat bonds dont count..)

but being a mailman = admiral/king unless you want to spend a century slowly ranking up...

naval ranks make no sense and a overhaul on it would make the game better!

They're honorary ranks. It's not the real navy, it's the naval auxiliary. It's like being a knight in the UK today. The Queen doesn't expect you to provide levies and tax peasants if you're knighted. Though the thought of Elton John or DBOBE doing so is funny.
