New Occulus User - Keyboard/HOTAS beccome unresponsive while playing.

From the ED Launcher (after starting the Oculus software). Really don't want to fart- around with Yet Another Weird Install Location now I have everything setup (I normally use several 3rd-party apps such as EDDI and EDDiscovery).

I do have a Steam key already, but really hate the fact that Steam downloads all versions of the game (32-bit, 64-bit, and Horizons) as well as needing to click through half-a-dozen Launchers/Windows to start it up (ok, slight exageration, but seriously, FDev & Valve need to fix this!).

Had a bit of a longer play today and while yes, the immersion is fantastic, the (lack of) resolution is seriously bugging me.. not sure if I'm going to keep it or wait for next-gen VR.

I don't think it's your usb. I had not been playing Ed for a few days and yesterday I was running a couple of test for about an hour. The focus switching happened to me twice in that time (once at launch), of course killing my hotas and mouse. My system hook up (or anything else) has not changed in months and was without issue before this. I ,as well, thought I had just clicked the mouse outside the window and dismissed the situation. There also seems to have been changes made to mouse behavior in the game by Frontier. I use the mouse for most functions in the GM. The mouse no longer drags the map when I hold down the left button, nor does the right button control my Z axis -it now rotates the camera. I have changed no in game controls in months, as well. The mouse cursor now hovers in 3d space. All this has changed in the last few days. My guess is Frontier may be trying to make the mouse work in VR or something like that and a bug may be causing the jump in focus. I will do some extended play testing tomorrow and update my findings.

As to your displeasure with the resolution, if your are coming from a 4k setup, VR resolution in ED will be a step down for sure, but you can improve that quite a bit by increasing the hmd setting to 1.25 or more depending on you rgpu and various other tweaks posted in this forum. As well, your brain adapts in short order and the immersion takes over. ED is not a native VR game and games like Robo Recall give a better representation of 1st gen graphics. Almost all 4k users state they still would rather have the VR. Next gen hmds are likely a couple of years out at least.

I also did quite a bit of playing yesterday (visiting some crash sites etc). To that end I was also navigating in the GM with both HOTAS and mouse, as well as tabbing out to Spotify. During those several hours I didn't get any VR input control freezes like Micha mentions. With respect to the GM I only use the mouse scroll wheel to zoom in/out - for everything else I use the HOTAS bindings.

For launching I'm using Steam, but you have two options there: either launch as normal and then select 'play via VR', or launch the steam VR and then Elite. The second option seems to bypass the Elite launcher but aside from that both methods work well.

I do suspect FDev are tweaking some of the VR parameters. I month or so ago every time I launched ED it loaded in 2D so I had to manually set to HMD - that seems to have fixed itself now. And at least our bodies no longer dissappear in hyperpsace!

Hope you solve your issue...

This week I ran into a situation that nearly got me killed, with the controls becoming unresponsive. In this case, Windows popped up with a request to schedule a reboot for patching, and stole focus from the game. Once I answered its question, I could go back in and continue playing. But the update scheduling couldn't be de-focused, it forces you to reply to it. GRRRR.

But the reason I bring it up, is that it illustrates that anything that steals focus from ED will seem to disable your controls, as others are pointing out here too.

Well I did so more testing and although I didn't get the focus change it was a fairly short session. My mouse was jumping around some though in the menus and I couldn't get to the top of some of them. I went back to non-vr and full screen to see if when I returned I could get ED to stop setting the windowed mode resolution. No go. When I returned to VR the game insisted on setting this to 1280x768. I hate that. Mouse was still jumpy and this may be why it was jumping focus. I, then, went into the game's mouse settings and notice that some of the mouse sensitivity sliders were advanced. I reduced all 4 sliders to minimum and the mouse stabilized. I can now reach all the menu items in menus and my galaxy map mouse controls are now back to working as desired. I hadn't previously moved the mouse slider so can't say where they were set before, but bottoming them out seems to have restored order. Curious.

Huh, interesting. I may try that too. I hate how jumpy it gets now.

So today I started up ED directly in VR mode (using DrKaii's excellent EdProfiler to change the settings before starting the game), and it Just Worked.

Alt-tabbing in and out does not result in perma-death of the controllers.

I did reinstall Steam (to force it to use a different library folder; seriously, the Steam client gets worse every time I use it) but have not yet finished downloading/installing ED for it.

Can't think of anything else I changed since the last time I played... (and yes, I'd used EdProfiler before).
