Multi-crew hosts: Please turn your open mic OFF

70% of the time I join multi-crew sessions, I have to tell the host right way that his/her mic is left on.

Tonight, someone left their mic on and thought that it was off. It was still on, but it seemed apparent that he wasn't looking at the comms panel. The next thing you know, he starts eating chips and chuggles down beer before giving out an unforgettably deafening burp that obliterated all of the audio in the game for several seconds!

I'd rather the mic be left on then ignored for an entire MC session. Communicating important info via text chat feels a little ridiculous when my avatar is right next to the other person's.

I just imagine being in a tiny office where all the occupants are so hatefully passive aggressive they email each other instead of actually talking.

Bit rude not having any consideration for your guest, more like. I wonder if your boss burps and farts when you joined their company.

I host (regularly) with an open mic, and I treat my guests to a full on role played tinfoil hat wearing, highly opinionated ranting nut case. Im quite introverted IRL, so its good for me, and most people seem to stick around.

So, hosts, keep those mics open, and entertain your guests. Lets make multicrew great again!!

You might want to consider whether the other player has a hearing impairment that would make conversation over voice chat against the background of game noise (especially shooting, boosting and explosions in a res site or CZ) practically impossible for them. I mean you won't of course because unfortunately people never do, but you should.

That still must have been a pretty outstanding experience while in t he depths of space - a proper space-burp!

Hahaha I had a right laugh at your post John, as I kind of do the same thing, but without the mic - I have no idea how many hours I have spent writing random, innuendo-filled, nutjob psycho-comments on the local comms channel either in RES sites or at CG stations! Have recruited quite a few other nutters to the faction though lol!!

eg: Monty Burns impression whenever arriving at an instance, or when someone else arrives - "Ahoy hoy o7"

Open mics are fine, but do please mute yourself if you're;
  • Eating
  • Drinking
  • Heavy breathing
  • Talking a phone call
  • Talking to RL people
  • Or somehow using the loo.

:p

CMDR Cosmic Spacehead

"Somehow" - hahaha!! Ah that list could get really big dude!! ;)

My sincere sympathies to those affected. Honestly, I wouldn't have thought of that.

I'm on xbox and I estimate around 80% of ships I've crewed ignore mics completely. It's possible some of those were hearing impaired folks but to me it reads as a general trend (or I'm just super unlucky). I guess I can just imagine all those CMDRs as being hearing impaired, it would be a solid explanation for why the guy sitting in the seat next to my avatar can't hear me.

After like 10 years of dealing with open mics, I find their comedic value is pure gold. I once heard a players dad yell at him for being a deadbeat adult child ("do something with your life" is an inside joke for me now). My personal favorite is the multiple times I've heard guys ignore their crying babies to continue playing battlefield. You can get a lot of laughs out of open mics if you have a dark sense of humor.

One problem with open mics in multi-crew: Because the game amplifies the voice chat to make it sound like a radio, you tend to hear static throughout the whole multi-crew session.

In this particular case, I really dont think the onus is on me. People who either dont like it, or who are impacted negatively can simply leave the session and join another. Or hey, heres a radical idea, they can host there own session and set what rules they like.

Dont get me wrong, consideration for others very important to me, but its also a two way thing, and i
Im not forcing my activities on anyone else. Even if I was the last guy hosting multicrew, I would not accept that responsibility as mine.

Drunks of Sol approve!

I've heard much, much worse in my LOTRO days though :D

My mate plays LOTR a lot, used to be in a LOTR creatures clan, led by a permanently drunk arsenal fan (apparently). Not some much the drinking, more the swearing!!!!!

ED is tame it seems in comparison.

Or temporarily turn voice down in the sound options?
And pretend to only speak spanish or something, unless the host is spanish obviously!!!!
