Please devs add a virtual keyboard to the galaxy map !

I disagree with you about attitudes. I think users have a right to express their feelings about ED. FDev gave us that mandate by telling us the game should still be viewed as early access and user feedback would shape the game going forward.
Like many folks here, I have invested a substantial amount of money (not credits!) in my setup to play ED in VR. Voice Attack is great and really brings another level of immersion to ED, but when it is required to plug gaps in a AAA game then I think FDev should be listening and responding with something better than 'it's a bit too much work'

People need to get their facts right and they are wrong to believe that a VR keyboard is a) easy to do or b) the responsibility of the game developer.

The problem with a vr-vendor supplied virtual keyboard is that it would look totally out of place in Elite Dangerous.

Most games which require a virtual keyboard on console implement their own to matxh the look and feel of the game.

A VK isn't that huge a deal to implement, especially if it is domain-specific (ie, restricted to system names).

I sent the following to FDev 2 days ago:

"When I first started with ED (a long time ago now), I suggested that VR users would benefit enormously from having a virtual keyboard available, particularly when using the Galaxy Map.

I have read on the forums, true or not, that FDev have no interest or intention of introducing such a facility and that FD have said that it is up to Oculus to remedy this particular problem.

Given that many of us invested in Oculus CV1 (and, in my case anyway, a £2,000 PC) specifically in order to play ED, it is disappointing that the best VR game currently available does not inspire its brilliant devs to produce something as simple as a virtual keyboard. The state of the Galaxy Map in VR is in anycase abysmal (I sent a bug report last year and another this year and had precisely the same "we're looking into it' reply in both cases), so having a virtual keyboard available may at least relieve some of the frustration when entering star locations, etc.

There are many of us VR users who are asking for the V Keyboard. FD say they are a supporter of the Rift, yet FD also seems determined not to help its players, in this case anyway.."

As yet, there has been no response other than the automated aknowledgement of receipt.

It's been nearly 18 months now since I - and others - first requested this facility.

Just had a response to the above suggesting I post about this on the forum! As you know, I've been there & done that.

Also had a reply from Oculus support saying that there is no virtual keyboard facility available with Oculus at present. They then went on to say they do not reveal possible features or developments of future products, etc, etc.

Personally, I still think it's down to FDev to do something. It is after all their game and their undoubtedly clunky, bolt-on 'stoneage' Galaxy map.

34th century, really...?

What is 'stoneage' about this?

Nothing - except having to remove the HMD (immersion breaking or what?), pick up a keyboard, type in the system name (whilst checking the spelling and digit code) and then replacing the HMd...all while flying through space when on an exploration mission trying not to get caught in gravity wells.

Sure, if you are just going from A to B on a standard mission, no problem; try it sometime on a 20K ly exploration trip (in VR) and then see how stoneage it is. You may be a VA expert; most of us are not.

Again, all problems and no solutions (apart from devs doing it). Get yourself a pilot's kneeboard (you'll be able to access that visually via the nose gap) and program voiceattack with the phonetic alphabet.

Thanks for linking this video. Well done on your VA work but there is nothing in that video I can't do with my Saitek X56 so I never have to touch my keyboard to zoom, pan, rotate etc. The issue is searching the galaxy when exploring. When you get out of the bubble the system names are long and complex and will take a while to spell phonetically for VA. You seem to have some VA expertise. I don't. How about contributing to a possible solution by sharing your VA profile?

Another option is to implement a "letter menu lister" aka a list of letters that you can stream with only the POV stick or another button in a direction and its oopsite and select with the trigger.
Simple as that, no need to have a real keyboard to be shown, only the possibility to stream letters and numbers and special characters and choose them on the fly .

"Elite Dangerous has continued to grow since its initial launch. With new content and new console Commanders making their way to the galaxy, Elite has never been a more thriving hub than it is today.
With our passionate and incredibly involved community at the centre of development, Elite Dangerous continues to evolve further, and we want to share with you what that future holds."

Above quote is from the blurb advertising FrontierExpo17 (my bold and italics). I guess VR users aren't passionate or involved enough to be at the centre of development. Why do you think we spent so much money on hardware FDev? Dumbasses.

I get the feeling that the FD staffers who drove VR development are no longer there. Certainly DB's attitude to VR has been lukewarm to say the least.

Using a hotas and did an exploration trip today, got my first discovered tag.

Ive got no problems navigating the galaxy- or system map using the hotas, got my keyboard between the throttle and stick and touch type no problem.

The controls for the map and text input are pretty much as good as they can get, yes the idea of HOTAS is that you can keep your hands on the controls but typing without a keyboard a bit much to ask.

I realize its available on the console version but that seems to me like a function of the platform, if you play on a PC it can be sort of expected that you will have standard peripherals available.

EDIT: id rather FD concentrate on stuff other the already working interface.
