I was doing a bit of light exploration the other day, so I could get myself to cordial with a small, otherwise unimportant faction.

I think I worked out why I don't normally like exploration.

Judge me as you will... I think the music in this game is "meh" at best.

When I was flying this Hauler the other day, I decided instead to first make a YouTube playlist of metal albums I enjoy. (I might share later. I have a few additions to make. By a few, I mean I might not game at all tonight but rather just find music for the playlist.)

So I think I'm going to give exploration a proper go, at last. I couldn't do it in DW, I self-destructed when I hit Colonia, you get the idea...

I present to you, the "Heavy Metal Unicorn", a Cobra Mk III, of course.

Now she won't actually have these stats'. I used the best roll button. :p

But I think this is a solid build. As long as I get a good grade three FSD, I'm going to be around that crucial 30ly mark. (I haven't ruled out a grade four roll. I'm finding that easy to get material for on Xbox, so no reason not to try on PC.)

The big difference? On this flight, my Cobra will have the finest quality metal playing. None of this Avenged Sevenfold crap either. Real metal. The blackest of black, the bleakest of bleak. And Hatebeak, because who doesn't like a screaming parrot? (I'm not joking. Look up the band on YouTube.)

The aim for me is fitting. I want to find an edge. An area of space with a vista's so black, it'll probably make my soul shrink.

Yay!

I can heavily recommend Opeth.

Man's metal...with an epic touch.

Also, they gave me the base for my gunship's name.

If you're ever killed by the Goat of Perdition, you know now who sent it...

EDIT: Also, I hated exploration the first time. Gotta do it in a ship you love and approach it with the least amount of intention to reach a goal as possible. Just float and enjoy. I still kinda hate it now, but at least I haven't self destructed yet, and the fighters my iCuttexplorer carry give me my fun speeding times in normal space.

I have the black Friday paint. I reckon I should also get white thrusters. Seems fitting. Plus graphite SRV's in lieu of black Friday for them.

I might consider the Mk IV variant.

What do people think of it as a ship for exploration?

I'll be honest mate, I don't think it's the music.

Exploration's just... Dare I say it? ... Boring.

We're all different. I for one find music to be very important. I have, no joke, thousands of hours on the PS2 Ace Combat games. I attribute this not to gameplay, but rather to an incredibly evocative soundtrack.

YMMV

Good music will definitely help. But I suspect that people who hate exploration, will still hate it, even if they bring their favorite tunes. :)

All I can see in my minds eye OP:

I hear you (no pun intended). Music does indeed help.

Having a ship that's actually fun to fly is just as important though (for me at least). Main reason I don't explore in an Asp or Conda anymore.

Might want to at least try out an Adder or Sidey with Enhanced Thrusters (no engineering needed - you can buy them off the shelf at Felicity's). You can thank me later. ;)

I've tried them alright. But they're not Cobras. ;)

the sounds of ED are fantastic, more so the SRV planet side music & sounds!, SC and honk scooping need some variation other than the music it plays when you reach the end of your route but overall I have never listened to music while playing ED and I've travelled a fair bit.

Thargoid sounds around their bases / barnacles / ships are by far the best!

Well, turns out the Heavy Metal Unicorn will be a Viper Mk IV.
