Storybook Galaxy Free playable mission released

While I applaud the effort, I watched some of the vids and wasn't that inspired. Unfortunately, you're just doing the same old missions, but now with some added audio that you have to wait for (reminded me a Fallout 3, where it was often faster to read all the text and select a response before the actual audio was complete). Anyway, I like the concept and in the future, if FD ever adds some kind of mission editor, think this could be really great.

It does add a much needed dimension to the game though.

Yup, probably not the best move. Keep in mind this is a demo though : I hope HCS will listen to the feedback.

*SPOILERS*

Understood folks :) - Now, this is not an excuse for Hutton run.... We needed to have some delivery time, and wanted to see how people would react to a long run to Hutton, with some audio content - It does change the journey (according to the many so far). For me, the thought of it just makes me want to skip that part, of course it does, but we're not the only players :). Some won't go to Maia because they feel it's pointless (I disagree), some won't do community goals.. But yes, I get it, Hutton is a long way... Noted, and thanks.

Just watched O.A.'s video and it looks really good, I'd love to try it for myself but since I'm an Xbox user that's unlikely to happen. It would Require integration of Cortana with E.D and that doesn't look likely any time soon 🙁

The only payout from the demo story, is the cargo mission credits, the materials you collect in the SRV, and the 24 tons of rare Hutton Mug that you sell.

Yeah - not sure I want to go to Hutton either. Naturally there can be no payment in the end - this is not a FD mission so how did you expect you would get paid? A third party can't do that in-game. I never expected to get any reward for it but I suppose the developers of the mission wanted to do something for you and so you can stock up on the Hutton mugs and sell those for some good return. But there are other rare goods - probably should have chosen one of those. I have acquired the pack but not sure whether or not I'll do it yet. The Hutton trip does put me off tbh.

Another bit of advice - try not to be too wordy. Another poster made the point that a list of options that you can choose from is often faster. I know that immersion is improved when there is a voice involved, but careful scripting is needed I feel. I watched OA's vid and heard quite a bit of the vocalisations and it does seem a bit wordy - needs to be more business-like. Have you noticed that all the traffic control messages are brief? They convey good sentiment or instruction, but within a few seconds. This means a reduction in information overload (when other voices could be speaking to you such as your ship or whatever) and efficient use of time. And reduces the chances of bumping heads with other messages.

But I do have to add that from what I have seen it appears like a brilliant concept and very well executed for a first try. Good job.

It isn't wordy - There's 4 responses to remember - We studied how the cognative process works with this, and made choices based on that - "Acknowledged" or "yes" or "understood" will suffice. For inpact I guess OA wanted to just act a bit :).

Hutton is there, not just for old school veterans to approve, but for new players, and maybe other folks that are happy to do it - Introducing them to community information and player groups is important. Plus we wanted to deliver a story, It's not for everyone, we know that, and for me, if I was being self indulgent about doing it, I'd much rather have done something else other than a long haul to Hutton.

Its a concept - Putting Hutton in was never going to remain a secret, or everyone's cup of tea ;) - I get it, I do... But its important people get to experience what CAN be done, rather than what some feel we should deliver.... Its not about pleasing all, its about delivering story. My team did their best with a limited budget and a short time frame - with the objective of making something that 'might' please the many. MANY of which haven't even made it to the forums yet.

It might've been nice if the OP had addressed this.

As I said, I don't really mind if VA/HCS customers have an additional source of revenue compared to those who don't use their products but it certainly contradicts FDevs policy of "No DLC provides an advantage".

What I'm really concerned about is that if HCS can generate some kind of in-game payment using 3rd-party tools then surely somebody else could use those same tools to create a sneaky add-on capable of generating infinite funds.

What in-game payments? You did the mission?

Hutton Orbital... Right, well I was enjoying this until that.

Real shame.

Got to the part where he said to go to Hutton orbital....

I am roleplaying that I spaced the guy. No amount of money is worth that journey.

For my initial post in this thread:-

Yeah I saw :) I think people get what we are trying to accomplish (most people) - There's always going to be many that dont / won't install / try it.. hey ho. Myself, my team, we're players, huge fans, we try these things because people ask us to do it...Out of the love, we all have here at HCS, for the game... we just get on with stuff.

Great stuff.

So HAVE you found a way to offer payments in your DLC or not?

No, I wasn't looking. Why would we - We're content creators not magicians - We can make it so that that linear objectives for the newcomers take them to various areas in a "tour guided" sort of process. There's much we can do with our plugin. In real terms, that's the only way it could be done, and easily. Some people have stepped up and offered to assist with that type of content - "These are the prerequisites for your ship for cargo capacity... So, go do this, then that, then go there, pick this up, scan that" etc etc. Something that we'd like to do of course. But hey, only if... Just depends on feedback, demand.

No, you do NOT actually receive a payment and they even made it so not getting paid doesn't break immersion...

Things don't go as planned resulting in your mission for "Taylor" not being completed and her being chased off by a bounty hunter...

I did watch Obsidian Ant's video on this yesterday. Looked pretty darned cool!

I'm on PC, but I play the game in/through my Home Theater more like you would play with a console. Not really equipped for having a Mic attached to the box and all that, but this looked intriguing enough that I might have to give this a go! :D

Thanks. [up]

Again, what I was asking wasn't really a criticism of your product.
It was more a concern that if you could do it in a legitimate mod', somebody might be able to use the same tools to cobble together an "underground" mod' that achieves the same thing.

There's a few reasons why I'm not keen on VA but I really do have a lot of respect for the work that's gone into your products and I only wish there were some way that you could become more directly involved with FDev in adding more stuff like this to the game. :)

other than a few yes/no kind of replies, the storybook does not use voice control. It's essentially using VA to run the events. We deliberately designed this with non-voice control users in mind, with just a hint of interaction.
