Horizons Life support shut down

I read a post a couple of years ago where a CDR posted he would find a quiet spot in space, shut down his life support, watch his canopy frost over and then he would log out. I'm wondering if you do that will you be alive in the same spot when you log back in? I'm not willing to bet a 31,000,000 credit rebuy on my Corvette to find out but I may buy a Cobra and test this. Anybody else tried this? it would be pretty cool if it works. It would be like putting yourself in suspended animation and then reviving yourself when you want to get back into the action.

Should be fine, the life support timer doesn't count down when you're not online.

Not sure why you'd want to do this though, especially with a vette, when you log back in you're going to have to switch everything back on and wait ages for shields to recharge etc... You'd be left vulnerable for a while while everything is booted up... Unless you're just shutting off the life support, but that might not cause the ice effect as all your other modules will still be putting out heat.

It's also worth saying, the life support timer won't count down when you're offline, but it is finite and is only topped back up when you dock. So every time you log off by shutting stuff down, you're eating into a finite supply that won't be refreshed until you dock, not good if you're out exploring.

actually if out exploring i shut down everything BESIDES life support before calling it a night (as jon flint already said, the o2 timer counts down).

unfortunately the game does not store your heat level, so if you log in the next day, while being in the same place, and modules being turned off, the canopy re-freezes.

a friend of mine therefore has the game running 24/7 and scoops in the morning before going to work ... explorers :D

Is there a place where I can view my O2 timer? I am planning a long trip and would be interested to check that.

Thanks everyone for the info.

no, but as soon as you disable life support you see the o2 ticking. d-rated life support has 7 minutes 30 seconds.

When I log off in space, I drop out of super-cruise and then I point towards the black and shut down everything except the life support, power plant and the power distributor. I have logged off for days this way and everything has been fine.

I don't get it, it just removes your ship when you log, anyway?

Also, you only need the distributor for other things- shields/aux, thrusters, and weapons. All you REALLY need is PP/life-support. I've done it a couple times, for no reason.

Cool, as you wish. That is how I have learnt to do it and it works for me.

why? Is it purely RP?

Even if so, that makes little rational sense. There's no real RP analogue for "logging out". Although there#s a mysterious time lapse in between sessions, otherwise in-game existence is ceased when offline. A logical response would be those periods set aside for sleep or other biuological function, but why wouyld there be any requirement to closedown integrtal life support systems to do so?

Yeah it's just role playing but if a CDR likes to do it to add some enjoyment to the game I say do it. Sometimes when I have landed on a planet in the Asp I find a dark, deep canyon to hide her from pirates her before I log out. I know nothing is going to happen to the ship after I log out but it adds to the realism of the game.

I just find an isolated planet, put my feet up on the dash board(desk) watch the sun go down for a bit, then activate the cloaking device (log out). :)

I understand this - but shutting sdown the life support systems prior to logging out makes even less sense in this regard.
