Braben teased a future update, said the next logical step would be to introduce settlements on planets

well imagine the stench of all that bio waste being shipped from the outer rim to the core worlds, I would stay inside inhaling toilet freshener too!

That just sounds like a life style choice :)
+1 for more animated life in stations and settlements.

I think it strange that one of their guess speakers at the expo is an expert in alien life. given that their very little alien life in the elite dangerous universe at the minute.

Strange but promising! This is the part of the schedule that excites me the most to be honest, since it hints at FDev teasing/revealing not only planets with atmospheres, but planets with life as well.

It would be severely anti-climactic if the only connection is with Thargoids. And with the third game being Jurassic Park..

I REALLY hope settlements aren't the next step in planetary development.

Settlements don't just get splattered around the surface of a planet randomly.
They end up in positions that yields some benefit.
The first thing they need to do (in much the same way that evolution/god/the flying spaghetti monster did it's thing) is satisfactorily complete all the topographical work they plan to do on planet surfaces.
At the very least, that should mean applying oceans and mountains to planets.
And then bunging the settlements in positions close to seas & rivers and on plains etc.

If settlements happen next I'd say that's a fairly strong indication that planets are as developed as they're going to get. :(

I just want Space Legs to be a thing soon. Imagine being able to actually explore the interior of your ship, or those docking areas.

Agreed.
To be honest I am infinitely more interested in the way FD will implement non-sentient life, flora & fauna, on atmospheric planets, than in the the Thargoids.
Thargoids and other sentients are cool, don't get me wrong, but being able to go down to the surface of atmospheric planets with lush plant life and a all kinds of weird relatively 'primitive' life forms is something I am very much looking forward too.

A planet with water would be an atmospheric planet.

I'd love to land on planets with liquid like water, lava streams etc.

A settlements upgrade imo would mean that they add stuff to make the settlements come alive (NPCs walking, vehicles), and bigger procedural versions with more variety.

Agreed.

I think atmospheric planets with lush plant life are a small percentage. Primitive lifeforms and creatures would be added with a later update.

Sandworms on planets without atmospheres would be cool. Let us hunt creatures with the SRV.

I'm fairly certain we'll never get space legs, FD have so much other stuff promised and walking around hasn't been mentioned by any devs for years now, those things along with our avatars being classed as holographic rather than real for no sensible reason makes me think we'll never get out of the pilot seat in this game.

To quote the Wiki: "The Holo-Me is a representation hologram of what you're going to look like. It then applies it to your Commander, who is a real person sitting in the chair. The crew that join your ship (multicrew) through telepresence are holograms."

It would add a lot to the game in my opinion, and it would also take some of the wind out of Star Citizen's sails, which should be a concern for Frontier at some point. I realise it's not an easy feature to develop, but I'm sure they could do it.

Well if you go out the door behind the pilot's seat in a cobra you walk straight into the outer wall of the SRV bay, so good luck with that.
Makes you wonder where the engines and the cargo goes doesn't it?
I remember FD saying that all ships were designed with space legs in mind and so they all have 'realistic' interior layouts.

The Cobra design has always been a little questionable, internal volume wise. But still, come on, you'd love to be able to wander around in your ship wouldn't you?

What kind of settlements? I think it's important that we can see NPCs walk and drive around, because that makes it feel alive. The current surface ports feel like ghost towns. Frontier should use the crowd tech of Planet Coaster.

Player groups should be able to build and manage a settlement. That would add real depth to the sandbox.

Seems to me DBOBE means player owned settlements on planetary surfaces.

Who wrote that wiki article? someone official?

Nice article. Like we need another investor telling the developers what does and doesn't go into the game.

Ah I remember with fondness how he talked about gas giants...some 18 months ago give or take...

Little teases are all well and good, but when do we actually see something?

Never. dont you know we dont deserve it. If you try push the fact that this game doesnt really deliver most of what it says it would , then you will be labeled immediately as the(Insert appropriate descriptive curse word.) in the conversation. O well there I go being an (Insert appropriate descriptive curse word.) again.

I can not say better

Oh, Tencent - soon you buy 10,000,000 Credit for just Tencent.

Maybe it will be a good thing, maybe it won't.. I just don't have a lot of faith in the Chinese when it comes to gaming experiences.

Everytime Braben talks I feel like the game he has in mind is not the game we are playing.
He's all up in his dreams, which is good... But not realistic, not in the current state of the game.

At the game launch Q&A, I got the mic, and as I recall, I asked DBOBE, something along the lines of, "You see a lot of spaceships in game (which are all excellent!), but never anyone actually flying them, or people in stations. Are we going to see people at some point". There was a not committal response.

This was pre- Horizons don't forget. And then there were trailers for the game, showing commanders walking around the docking bay.

And still, here we are, years later. And we still dont see people walking around anywhere. The entire Galaxy has no people, EXCEPT, you do see them in player cockpits now..

So yeah +++++++ that point. We REALLY need to see NPC peeps, walking around, driving around. But its just taking them an age to do it. Maybe the Planet Coaster crow system can indeed be employed here, to that effect. Hopefully soon.

Here are some starting wishes in this regard.

* Docking Bay, control towers, people in there, moving about, drinking capucino's, etc.
* Landing Pads, ground crew, waiting to put the fuelling pipe in, unload cargo and whatnot.
* Around station interiors, walking around (luxury parks). Doing repairs in industrial.
* That clear plastic donut tube near spaceport entrances, a viewing gallery, lets have people in there, walking around, and viewing ships coming in in and out, kids waving etc.
* The yellow trucks, lets have people in cabs, clear rooves, people inside, SRV driving past. MORE VARIETY!

And then a similar treatment on ground ports.

Dont forget robots as well, we can buy and sell them, why not see that in stations, our outside in space, doing repairs. Would really help impart a sense of scale.

I would rather not see giant sandworms. I don't think they're a logical lifeform as they would require significant amount of energy for their metabolism, and evolution would kill them off pretty quickly. I am interested to see (if ED does alien lifeforms) what they would look like - I hope that it will be a bit better than in NMS :)
