Storybook Galaxy Free playable mission released

Just a pity that FD who are sitting on cash reserves of 16 million quid (pre the 10% share buyout by Tencent) didn't think to invest any of that cash in their flagship product.

And you know that how?

Since you probably do not have any idea of the their internal finances you cannot say that they have not invested a lot of money in their flagship product any more than I can say that they have.

My guess is that their investment in Elite is large.

I always thought that E : D would be FD's cash cow, while Planet Coaster would remain a semi niche game. It's obviously way too early to weigh the financial part of their new project. Still : at the moment, do we have any idea of the importance of E : D in their global balance ? (sorry for my bad English here, hard to formulate that properly, hopefully you'll get the idea ...)

I understand you perfectly.

I think I heard it said that there is a new game coming from FDev. If that is the case it might be that the cash on hand they currently have will be used in part of fund that. But that's only a guess.

As for the relative importance of their games I do not know. I don't think anyone outside the company will know this.

I understand why people don't want to go to Hutton. The premise here is telling a story with some interaction. The Hutton run allowed us to demo things and tell a really good story without spending months developing every step. Part of our ideas are to take you on a journey to all the places of interest. Like alien ruins or generation ships or whatever, the places we don't all bother going to as we saw it on a stream or youtube. Branching missions with different endings are all possible....we shall see :)

I think you guys are onto something.

The story telling aspect reminds me of the old radio Sci Fi serials, which I have a large collection of.

Did you miss 2.3 by any chance? Have you been living under a rock (on a beige world) ?

So is it entirely role-play?

I watched the taster thing but I am still a little confused about how it works.

Once the demo has been installed and you land at Lave Station you will receive the message asking you to undertake a "mission". The Obsidian Ant YouTube video is the best one I've seen of the start of the demo. You answer the questions and play along as OA demonstrates. The demo then takes you on a journey asking you to undertake various things and you also get some narrative about one of the characters with whom you interact.

As I mentioned above this is a simple, linear story but shows the possibilities that this technology can offer. If the interest is real enough we may well see further chapters in the stories with a more complex, non-linear storyline for us to play with. The demo is well thought out except, perhaps, the journey to Hutton Orbital but this was done deliberately to give them time to relate other parts of the story that would otherwise requires a lot more development to achieve. Remember, this is a demo to judge the interest in the product.

Does that help?

This is only roleplay. VA will play the SBG sounds, asking you to do this or that. The program parses the Player Journal to check if you did what was asked and once it's done, it plays the next sound file. No real "in game" rewards. As far as the E : D client is concerned, the SBG doesn't change anything, you could be listening to your favourite rock playlist instead.

It does,thank you.

Why aren't FD doing stuff like this?

Is this playable on Xbone?

Unfortunately not. It requires Voice Attack to run, which is something I don't think is available for Xbone.

The mission is really a complex set of scripts being run through a third party program (Voice Attack) while you're in the game, it's not an actual mission within the game itself.

I really hope this sort of thing catches on when some more tools are available. As it stands I found it quite difficult on occasions. For example, no matter how hard I try VA always interprets my "yes" as "use". And I have a trained voice engine as well. I actually don't think that VA plus the journal is enough to create real engaging roleplay. The reliance on voice recognition is just too great and introduces all sorts of problems - and limitations of course. But it certainly was a brilliant start as an example of what may be possible.

I got it, installed it and ran through it. very interesting concept and I enjoyed it. There were a couple times I could have used more guidance or reminders that I needed to get something done but I got through it. I hope there is more but what really needs to happen is there to be some in game stuff to go along with the story/event whatever it may be. It just needs a little cowbell added. Thats where you and FD need to come together and make it happen. This has such great potential to be an awesome thing. I look forward to see where you are going with this.

Apparently I need to update my Leo Voicepack to v2.4. How do I do this?
I had a purge of old emails a while back and think I may have accidentally deleted the one I used to reinstall after I had to do a complete wipe of my PC.

I went through this and I really enjoyed it. I wasn't to thrilled about doing the trip to Hutton as I heard it was pretty long. I had planned on doing it some day anyway so this gave me a good excuse to go. At least the I got to hear some story along the way so it made the trip not so bad. It was kind of cool to see how bad my ships paint got stripped on the trip. Over all though I like the concept.
