I'm getting close to starting my grade 5 FSD rolls. but I've little to no experience with engineers. I have farseer @ tier 5.
I plan on doing 200 rolls.
I should have it in another few weeks.
I found a solid source of arsenic via mining. I just need to shore up the CM. the wakes I can farm.
So do you think that's a good # of rolls?
I haven't read the whole thread but here's what I want:
A good roll for an Asp XP built for a long (very long) trip.
I guess what I'm asking is if you had 200 rolls what would you look for. (details)
I'm gonna take an srv and a mining laser and 2 amfu's
I would just like some advice on what to look for on good rolls.
hope I made sense,
Thanks

My Buckyball Racer Asp-X
The Nomad LINK has the following stats:
Optimal Mass: 1641.3 [+56.3%]
Mass: 24.71 [+23.5%]
Max Fuel per Jump 5 [+0%]
The optimal mass was - I think - from a good primary roll with a +7% secondary roll. A bonus to max fuel would obviously have helped, but the relatively low mass penalty was the thing that boosted the range. Usually with a decent optimal mass roll you get a big penalty to mass (expect a mass of around 28t) so any roll with a over 55% optimal mass, plus a low mass penalty or a big max fuel bonus will give a very good result.
Stripped down apart from an ADS scanner I get 60.1 LY range on fumes. For the recent Buckyball Racing Club Double Action Jackson event I could have done a neutron boosted 240.99LY jump from Jackson's Lighthouse to Beta Sculptoris (and then back) by removing the ADS (I think that gave me 60.46 range) - I didn't manage a stripped down double-boosted run during the race, but tested it out afterwards:
200 rolls

eek

will certainly give you a few good results, obviously there's a large slice of luck involved. As I mentioned in my original post, I'm fairly sure that I got my FSD after less than 30 rolls. I've made lots more rolls since without getting a better result.
If you can afford it, I'd recommend buying a couple of extra 5A FSDs if you're making that many rolls. Keep the best FSD for your Asp or to transfer into a Diamondback (if you ever need another 5LY or so range), and fit the others in pythons / type-7s / orcas, which all use the same class 5 FSD. This saves you having to swap out FSDs if you want to fly a python at a CG or something. You're likely to get several really good rolls out of 200, so it seems a shame to bin all but one of them.

Here's a link to
The Nomad, reconfigured to include DSS scanners, an SRV, mining laser, 3D shields and a 16t tank:

Even if you don't manage a 'god' roll you'll certainly get within a light year I'd think, although quite a bit of the bonus comes from light weight scanners and life support. Farseer gives the same scanner bonus, but only Lori Jameson gives the life support bonus.
One thing that I definitely recommend if you're going off on a long expedition is to unlock either The Dweller, Marco Qwent or Hera Tani to level 3 and getting a class 1D engine modified grade 3 distributor. A good secondary roll will increase engine capacity to above 13MW, which is what you need to make a boost in an Asp-X or a DBX. Assuming that you're carrying the mining laser for emergencies, the hit on weapons recharge won't be a big problem.
