Newcomer / Intro How to Interact Using Data link Scanner

Recalling my own problems with this it seems you have to make sure (other than all the above good tips) to point at the data tower just so to read data. My setup with my Hutus (X52 Pro) seems rather overly sensitive when controlling the torrent. So lining up is often time consuming.

Here you go - first image is my SRV fire group, second one is me scanning the data point (after driving up to it, switching to turret and targetting it) by pressing fire 2.

it seems that mine setting is already exactly like yours, but the problem is when switching to turret and targetting it) by pressing fire 2, it extract the turret and I could not scan it, and when I am in SRV without switching to turret I can not scan, so It might be somewhere my controle is not right, so the question is , how can I scan while I am in Telepresence , because when Press fire 2 as scannner is assigned to, it extreact the turret(Telepresence)

Yeah - I now think the issue is your key bindings. Check those for driving and targeting - I have the turret use set to another button, it may be that that is interfering with your fire 2 button. Note that the fire 2 on your HOTAS is not neccessarily the '2' option in the firegroups, the '2' in the firegroups is dependent on what button you have assigned to it. Also - I target it with the 'select target in front of me' which is a seperate button again. You need to do this before pressing the fire group 2 button. It's a bit convoluted, but once you get it working it does make sense. :)

OK, So ive read all the thread.

My datalink scanner will not work when aimed at a tower in turret mode and binding is set on secondary fire, in my case an X52 with button C configured by default.

So I get into the base and im parked up targetted on the transmitter (like you do on a ship in space) its got a white target marker on it and I hit and hold Button C for the time it takes to make my sunday dinner and i get squat, nothing, the datalink isnt working.

Ive gone into options and checked the weapon settings, remapped the secondary fire button to Fire C on my X52, Ive switched fire weapons deploys to both on and off and APPLY to both and same results.

Think that just about covers all the advice in this thread so far. So Im sat here on a planet surface in a scarab aiming at a point that does nothing, and the point of the data scanner is?

Yep you guessed it, bald again from frustration and pulling my hair out. Ive watched youtube videos with some guy mumbling and waffling away to himself, look how good I am. Ive read the manuals, Ive looked at 6 sites so far. for how to do this supposed quick mission thats so far taken just about 2 hours of trying to figure out what the hell makes this thing work, Ive even tried having it on a fire group of its own. still does nothing.

Ok, what I would like please is a clearly laid out set of instructions how to set this thing up and how to configure all this so that it works.
Yep I really do need hand holding through this and no english bad and please.

CURED

Once youve targetted the data source, ie white marker, get into the turret mode to do this first.

Now get into Telepresence and use the thrusters controls to AIM the datalink scanner at the target point and hold it. Stick the handbrake on, if your on a steep slope.

Once data is received, get back in your turret and you should recieve a message telling you to come and get paid.

The turret it seems has a telepresence partner that can scan like Head look. So those you Head trackers may be an idea to freeze them or sit very still.

I dont expect thanks for this, I expect clear instructions to be put in the help files in the game.

Though the last post on this thread is two years old, I ran into the same problem - I could not data scan the targets no matter what I did, just as described by the OP. Just like him, I followed all the step-by-step suggestions and still it didn't work.

It turned out that the only way to make it work is to go to the target list (in the SRV you cannot do this in the turret, so you have to get out of the turret mode). In the target list you will see the data sites at the installation. You need to select the one that is active and the way you get one active is to drive up to it with the SRV.

You will know when the target is active and selected as you will see a small white circle within the broken diamond as you aim at it with the turret. If that small white circle isn't there, your data scan will not activate.

So the procedure for invading an installation to get data with the SRV is...

Wipe out the defense guns so you have freedom to access the data terminals in the installation.
When you are NOT in turret mode, your scanner will show you where the data terminals are relative to your SRV with the usual little white rectangles
Choose one of those to drive to. Once you get close it will activate.
Don't go to the turret yet. Access the target list (left panel, just as in the ship) and select the data terminal that is active (it was activated by you driving close to it)
Now you go to turret mode, aim at the broken rectangle target and press and hold your data scanner button. It works!
When the scan is done, get back out of the turret mode to see where other data terminals are, drive to the next data terminal to activate it and repeat the above. Remember you've got to select the target from the target list!

This sounds way too complicated, but it is the only way I could get the data scanner to work in the SRV when I had a mission to collect data

Since the 3.x updates your ship has a data link scanner too. Fly into the trespass zone around the base. You have approx. 1 min inside the trespass zone until the base turns hostile. Once you're close enough the white dots become visible in the contacts tab. Select the right one, fly close to it (<200m) and scan it. When the scan completes the base always turns hostile but you can simply boost away now. If you can't find the scan target leave the trespass zone in time and try again.

Ships with a long nose in front of the cockpit can not get close enough to the scan target to activate the data link scanner (Anaconda, Corvette, maybe others). Use a medium or small fast ship with its cockpit on the nose of the ship (I use a Viper or Cobra).

NOTE: Using your ship's scanner is just an option. If you find it more fun to use the SRV, please do so. This is the way the game offers players different levels of difficulty.

Then this explains the timer that starts counting down the moment you complete a scan. In the mission I was on there were 4 sites that could be scanned, I suppose scanning any single one of them would have completed the mission. There is also a red rectangle that pops up saying PUBLIC and I don't know what that means.

If the terminal is public then scanning its data won’t get you a fine or worse, tapping into a private terminal is illegal.

Why are you all getting in to the SRV?

As far as I can recall, you can do all of the surface scan missions from your ship's cockpit, and it's a hell of a lot quicker

Update that list with the Mamba. Worked once before, but couldn't get close enough yesterday (except once, shortly, but not long enough to complete the scan).

The timer is for you to complete scanning all of those 4 before the timer runs out (you get more time added for each one scanned) - different sites have different numbers of these data-points to complete. I didn't think a mission wanted one of these type of data points as a mission target - I thought that usually the mission wants you to download from a data tower for example. Maybe I should do some current data missions to check.
