Exploration in VR

On toward Beagle Point

I have a high tolerance for tedium.

I've just departed Sagittarius A for Beagle Point after arriving by way of Colonia.

My biggest issue is eye fatigue from the rift, though my tolerance seems to be improving. The solution was a relaxed pace, doing 2500 to 5000 ly segments then taking a break.

I will also mix it up jumping for a while, then scanning entire major systems. But what really changes the pace is to land somewhere and go for a drive hunting for AFMU resources. The music on planet is a very relaxing piano. Keeping the speed down in the buggy makes it like a holiday. No stress, hard to kill yourself.

At this slow pace it might take as long as a year to complete the entire run. My jump range is only 28 and I'm not playing with the range extenders. At the point where the distance between systems begins to be greater than my jump range I'll turn right and do a quarter of the galaxy circumference following the arm back to the bubble.

I maneuver using Oculus touch BTW. Works great for exploration combined with Astra and voice attack. I don't think I'd use touch for combat because of latency added by the wireless setup.

V is so much of a performance hog that I quickly stopped using it. Framedrops were just too much.

But I really like using virtual desktop instead, which allows me to switch to desktop without removing the headset. This allows me to browse the web, switch songs in spotify or whatever, while keeping a small 2d ED window active at the same time.

I enjoy it a lot. I fly around unmapped space checking everything out - I do scan the full system as much as practicable. I take my time, do a lap of moons I can land on, look for anything that stands out for closer inspection. Due to the immersion in VR I pretend like I'm actually the first human in that system. and I DO want to discover something new.

If you're grind exploring (jump, honk, scan star, repeat) than Id say it's the same doing it on the screen/equally as monotonous.

I quite enjoy exploration - but it is a 'make your own adventure' kind of activity.

I love setting down on a planet that no one else has scanned, knowing I'm actually really the first to have seen that scenery.

One thing that is vastly different for me when exploring is the time it takes for the System Map to load in VR, this is what I did/do on a monitor:
- Enter the System
- Honk
- Once FSD Cooldown has completed fire it up for the next system
- Enter the System Map and see if there's anything of note worth looking at
- If there is I exit that and have enough time to cancel the FSD

But with VR the System Map loads so damn slowly I never get the chance so it takes a lot longer to get anywhere (I have limited time to play as it is), I've tried lower details in the settings but nothing works to make it quicker. Therefore I sometimes go back to Monitor for Exploration, not as good obviously and you lose that "wow" factor but at least I'm getting places in the time I have to play.

Leave the throttle halfway when entering system map. Then you've got all the time in the universe to check it out. If there is nothing, just exit the map and throttle up for instant jump. :)

I'll try that thanks, more frustrated with the loading time of the System Map itself though, that needs optimisation from FD to bring it in line with Monitor use. The Galaxy Map loads in the same time for both VR & Monitor so I hope it gets addressed one day.

This is what I love as well, it's also the fact, that nobody may ever see it again as well. You could be the only person to ever see that scenary in the game ever.
