Powerplay - Really? - aka: The Fascinating Quest for Prismatic Shields

Power Play is ruined by the selfish opportunists who join a power just to obtain the special weapon and screw everything else.

We deal with these idiots every single cycle. AD is especially prone to the "Idiot Invasion" due to the popularity of our shields. We do have a Slack Community in place to assist those who "truly" want to participate and help us with our goals. We do get a lot of new members on a regular basis, but a lot of our efforts are spent trying to undo the damage caused by the Idiot Invasion's clueless actions within the control systems.

Picking the closest and of course "easiest" system to haul their mats to regardless of the fact that this isn't what needs to be done, voting for expansion when consolidation is what needs to happen, and other crap like that.

Its a constant battle, and takes its toll on those who are trying to do something strategic with this feature. I really hope that FD removes the special weapons aspect from the feature so that we can finally say goodbye to all the selfish opportunists who like a swarm of Locusts that have decimated a crop, defect the second they obtain the special weapon. On to the next power to do it all over again.

Oops, it looks somebody is mistaking the game for real life again...

They are like a swarm of Locusts... On to the next power to begin their clueless idiocy all over again.

It's not idiocy that drives this. Nor is it cluelessness. PP has become a way to gain special weapons and shields. There's not a lot more than that for the vast majority of game players. It's not that we don't know. It's that we don't care.

We might see you in the same light as you see us. But we don't go around returning your insults. That would make us as classless as you.

I think you put that pretty well, but unfortunately GG7 has you on block, so probably wasted effort.

I tried PP a year or more ago when it first came out. It didn't grab me. I do play the BGS a lot, and spend my time flipping systems but I don't see that connected at all to PP (or I'm just missing the connection). My two main fields of play for BGS have both (randomly) been on the border of PP space, so a mix of PP-controlled and uncontrolled systems. Other than bumping into PP aligned NPCs I've never noticed any difference.

So, does PP have any impact on flipping systems, or vice versa, does my flipping systems for BGS reasons have any impact on PP?

Playing the BGS can have a minor effect on Powerplay. IIRC, if a control system has more than 50% of the systems in its sphere of influence controlled by a minor faction whose government type favors your Power's ethos, Fortification costs are decreased. On the flip side, governments antithetical to your Power's ethos can increase fortification costs, if they are in the majority.

For example, the Emperor works favorably with Patronage and Feudal governments, but not dictatorships, so those are the kind of factions I support, while doing my best to work against dictatorships. On the other side of the border, President Hudson is also weak against dictatorships, so when in Federation space, I keep an eye out for brave freedom fighters resisting Federation oppression, and lend them my aide.

Right.... how energetic that community seems to be is evidenced by the Aisling sub-forum here on the official ED forums. It is basically one guy posting with mostly zero replies. Here is the amazing content and riveting power play for this week:

Good morning Commanders!

Although we as an individual Power have had no exciting opportunities last cycle, we have achieved an impressive amount of fortification, which is always pleasing.

We shall see if any interesting systems open up to us this week.

Start as usual, by fortifying and voting for Consolidation.

If you want to get an early start then as usual a few fortification targets are encouraged, for example Wulwula, Undines, Blod, Chankates, Rutujil or HIP 105391.

The finalised objectives will be posted on Reddit and copied here when ready once the numbers wizards have done their magic dance.

Never ever fortify: Tsanla, Chnumar, Daibo, Grebegus, HIP 10786, Kuki An, Kaukamal, Panganau. You will make baby Aisling cry.

To find out more about the primary Aisling Duval communication hub, our community Slack (including how to join), read the FAQ:
https://www.reddit.com/r/AislingDuval/comments/4f36wq/the_official_aisling_duval_slack_community/

Also, to keep an eye on our dynamic objectives list, which changes as the cycle progresses, please visit the webpage at https://trello.com/b/HBY3rRZR/aisling-duval

Fly safe, commanders!

Following the Trello link, you get:

  • No Expansion
  • No Preparation
  • Undermining (Empty)
  • Just carrying pamphlets to fortify some systems, that is all the objectives for the week.

So GG7 posting here in this thread appears to be the most dramatic thing going on in Aisling's powerplay community. His statements about "Idiot Invasion" surely indicate the warm and welcoming nature of that community for new players.

As always with these threads, the OP and everyone on it forgets that its a team effort, and its the organised groups that make it worth playing. For a single player its baffling and seems pointless, but with others its fantastic.

Instead of shouting at a wall, why did no-one look at the power threads and then go to the groups who run said powers? You would have found all the answers you need there. Powerplay has a minimal presence on these forums, but Reddit, Discord and Inara are much better.

Do you expect a new player to know about Reddit, Discord etc? You are lucky if they even know about the official forums and care to consider what is available there. I went to the official Aisling forum here, looked at the objectives for this week and followed the Trello link. Nothing implied any kind of interesting game play elements available or worth the grind.

In the end, I dropped my pamphlets (again - tonnes of paper pamphlets in the 34th century?) at a system that was not on the "Do not fortify" list and was somewhat below 100%, assuming that this would at least not cause any damage to the people taking this seriously.

No I'm not.

I'm too busy playing the menu.

So don't?! It takes less than a minute to completely stock up on media materials in my Cutter (that's over 700 tons). I agree that the UI could be improved (e.g. an option to continue buying until your hold is full, without having to do it yourself). However, it is hardly a huge issue with how it works now.

At level 1, with an allotment of 10 units per four mouse-clicks and the typical transaction lag once for each 10 tonnes: no, you are not doing it in a minute.

Conversely, why should everything be available on the Black Market? The Power Play goodies are tightly controlled. Because it takes four weeks to actually get access to them, when people do have access they want to keep things to themselves - so they aren't going to be selling their modules on any market.
They aren't tightly controlled. I can totally blow off the Empire and keep the shields. I can kill both sides' Navies and still keep the rankings. It's laughable to think they are tightly controlled. The point I was making is that the game forces you to a point, but then pretends to offer "anything goes". Sure, anything goes, if you don't want to have anything but generic ships and modules.

Someone who travels to Sag A* has put in more time than someone who pledged to the Empire and then played however they wanted for 4 weeks. What does the Sag A* person get?

Yea, I'm gonna need you to upload a video to prove that. No way you can do that in less than one minute, unless you're Leezar incognito. Is there some sort of glitch I don't know about?

I get you're trying to say the journey is more important than the goal. But that doesn't apply very well to tedious artificial time sinks in Elite, not in my mind anyways.

LOL this is what I call a proper welcome back to the forums! I've missed you arrogant nerds sooooo much!

...btw, well done on not giving your full PC spec as a superfluous aside in this thread! :D

Whoa!!! This reminds me of the edge of the seat, adrenalin fuelled start to JJ's Star Trek movie & not at all of this...

Good job Frontier...it must be really satisfying to realise such dream apex gameplay as envisaged in the concept/planning stages [blah]

....

Yeah!! That's right! <Checks own post history (the ones that haven't been removed, that is)> *cough*

I tried to earn one of those modules twice. Always in the third week I was like: (redacted), screw this!
I think the designer is a Sysiphus fan. All the earning wasted each week must have made someone smile.

Right...one moment folks; CMDR StiTch! needs to put the protective hat on.

...

*clank*

...done.

Right, so let's get started. Why are you so bored, OP? Well your joy senses will be tingling like a gerbil in heat when you hear I have the answers for you! (and oh boy, I hope my helmet straps are done up tight).

...because you're playing a multiplayer activity as a solo player.

Yes, PG/solo players are equal and loved etc. - however no matter which way you shake your stick or which end of the brush you're grabbing, PP just does not work as a solo/soloable activity. The structure of the missions/merits, and the power rankings, and the expansion systems, and the interaction potential in general...are all very blatantly designed around a multi-player competition/paramilitary war.

With no further word on what went awry and why, simply bear that in mind. The potential of PP was the first real vector for emergent competitive play; its actual legacy is the removal of the only sense C&P had, a few module tourists, and a few PP grinders - most of even them treating it like a solo BGS grind.

And that is all it will ever be in this incarnation. A background simulator grind.
