Bindings are forgotten if joystick is unplugged

[PC]

Hi everyone,

don't know if this is a bug, so I'll post here first... (but it's definitely bugging me^^)

Sometimes I use my joystick for ED, but most of the time I leave it unplugged and just play with mouse and keyboard.
When I use the joystick and set the bindings, everything works fine. But when I start ED the next time without the joystick connected, all controls that were bound to the joystick are forgotten. This is kind of understandable... but I always bind the joystick to secondary bindings (while the primary bindings remain on the keyboard) and the bindings on the keyboard are forgotten, too.

So each time I start without the joystick, I have to rebind the controls that I used on both keyboard and joystick. Which is kind of annoying :)

Does that happen to anyone else? Any advice?

Having the ability to save and switch between multiple "custom" binding settings could possibly solve my issue, right?

Cheers

The key bindings are all in an xml file I think, so you could swap between them. (People are always talking about backing up keybindings before upgrades)

I use the steam linked ED client but the address for the binding file is

AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Sometimes i just want to log in and take a quick look at things without my HOTAS but when this happens i just dont.

Never had this problem with my X-55. Can even unplug it in the middle of the game and when I plug it back in it will work again (I've done that accidentally on more than one occasion!). I do always take a backup of my bindings file when I make any changes, but I haven't had to use that for a long time now (years).

you will lose your bindings if you start the game without the stick plugged in
you lose also all bindings if you use K+M an then plug in a stick

it's quite annoying

It is probably because when ED starts up it looks to see which Joystick is connected. If there is none it will default to the default and write that into StartPreset.start. When you plug in your joystick you will need to select "custom" in controls to get the correct bindings back. Unless you have renamed your binding file. If so pick that.
This is just a guess but it is worth a test.

Yes, it's frustrating that this occurs on a game charging AAA prices but you really do need to keep a back up of your keybindings because they have a habit of being overwritten or wiped.

Quality work by FDev as always.

Yep since launch day one. Its just the way it is, as frustrating as it is to have your dozens and dozens of bindings being stripped out. Can't think of another game that works this way...

As others have said, keep a backup, rename the profiles and keep many copies.

I would argue this is a bug, as it gives a bad customer experience (very bad if you spend a lot of time configuring your bindings), despite any logic reasons why they get removed.

No, this doesn't happen to me at all. Weird.

Can confirm. If I start the game without the stick plugged in it will switch to some default I believe, but the next time I play with the stick plugged in it goes back to my custom config. I used to fire the game up without a stick to complete mining missions when I had a hold full of mined stuff to maximise profit using just the keyboard, then log off and do it again later. Binds would be right when I was actually ready to play with a stick again.

When I start the game 98% of the time my HOTAS doesn't respond until I open the controls menu... don't have to do anything else but that, and it works right away. It's newer thing and didn't happen for years. Hope that helps.

If you start up without the stick connected, ed will trow out invalid bindings (bindings to controlers that are not there). As long as you dont open the controler config page of the option menue, this will be temporary (meaning: the binding config file will not be changed).
But if you go to controller config in game, and click on 'accept', the corrected config will be written to the config file, and everything is gone.
Happend to me twice.
Solution: Make a copy of your binding file, but dont keep it in the same folder. Strange things happen if you do.(ed will somtimes write changes to one file, but load the copy on next launch).

You seem to equate the amount of money paid to data safety. I've worked on multi-million dollar SAN units, with multiple redundancies to ensure uptime and we backed them up continuously. Anything and everything can fail in time and I don't care how much you paid for it.

Go through life without making backups and you'll have a life full of misery. Laziness is not a Frontier problem.

The rule is to not to attempt to do anything to your custom bindings while in elite if a controller is missing. Doing do will overwrite the settings of the file and you'll lose work.

If you just quit, plug the controller in, and restart it will work fine.

I've found it useful to back up the entire bindings folder. I can then switch to KB+M for a while and just restore the folder when I switch back to my HOTAS. I didn't know I just needed to disconnect my joystick to go to a KB+M configuration. That'll make it even more convenient. I'll give it a try.

and in every other game, i don't need to make a backup of my keybindings, i could even plug in Gamepad or stick and the keybindings would be still there
