Engineers Exquisite Focus Crystals - What am I doing wrong?

I've googled it and come up with a lot of misinformation, mostly from people confusing Refined Focus Crystals for Exquisite. The semi-reliable information seems to be that the actual Exquisite Focus Crystals can only be gained through missions in systems in Boom state.

I've tried several Boom systems with Empire, Federal and Independent factions in control. Running missions until I'm allied and still nothing. Not a single crystal with hundreds of missions completed.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a reliable system to find these?

It is certainly correct that they can only be found from the mission boards.

I always go to systems in boom as they generate more missions in my experience, and i personally go to Sol, because there is lots of factions of which I am allied with all and its pretty much permanently in boom. I don't think boom state is relevant in any other way than just generating more missions.

I don't know how personal rank effects the spawning of them as a mission reward though, as i am triple elite, but with board refreshing i certainly get them. Rank might well be an issue.

I usually spend a bit of time board refreshing to stack a few of them along with CIF and BTC's before running the missions if that's what I'm after.

Yey for exciting board refreshing.

Anyone who adds to this thread that they have got them from other sources is an idiot that can't read and tell the difference between the words exquisite and refined....

Thanks. +1 virtual rep since I need to spread it around.

Unfortunately, I don't have the Sol permit yet. I guess I'll need to keep an eye out for the mission rewards and do a lot of mode swapping. Since Sol's economy is Refinery, maybe I should look for one of those.

i've seen them with 'friendly' status requirement (as well as allied) but yes, they are extremely rare.

can't give better advice than that: go to any system and rep up with all the factions in the cluster around, focus on systems with many factions on boom, but do them all because they will boom eventually and you will have to stick around for a while. to minimize board switching (hate it) just do missions and switch stations and systems often (spreading rep) and try to have fun and make the time useful (e.g. you can get CIF too). relax and take it easy because you will need a lot of patience. i got around 1612 * EFC in this way in about three or four 3hr sessions around shu babassi.

also note i'm not doing any passenger missions (never did one and not going to bother with those unless forced to) so i don't know if they can give EFC too.

or wait until 2.4 and see what the bug piñata brings ...

* edit: just remembered i already had 4 efc when starting that 'run'. also my perception of time is a bit warped lately so it could have been longer :D

Iirc one of the devs recently posted that system economy has no bearing on mission mat reward types.

Edit, passenger missions do give them as well. In fact as an aside, for CIF I think passenger missions are better.

I think I get most of mine from mission boards.

I also think I get them from big combat kills when bounty hunting or running CZs (FGSs, Condas, etc...)

I'd suggest going to your 'home' system. Mine has like 7 factions and I am allied with 4 of them. Use FDevs poor netcode architecture and switch modes for free mission board rerolls. Even insanely easy data courier missions sometimes drop 2 per mission. Check mission board on destination starports (but don't modeswicth).
These drop like sand on the beach for me. Takes me an hour or so to get enough for some charge enhanced rolls until I am out of CIFs for the week.

Don't believe anyone has ever been able to show video/screencap proof of this. IIRC it's from people confusing focus crystal types.

I am constantly seeing them in both mission boards as rewards. I have some and don't need them, maybe that is why I get them.

These occur at my home system LFT 37 and throughout many of the places I visit while playing. See MEF quite a bit, which again I don't need.

CIF I see semi-regularly as well.

If you're empire aligned, or just want them and don't care who they're from, Aditi has yielded me a bunch, though I'm not exactly rolling in them. I don't think anyone is supposed to be.

MEF I never find (Literally, you know a guy? I need help), nor Military Superthingajigs

CIF I should probably start throwing away but I'm paranoid to do so because of all the rarity complaints/claims I see on here......

CIF is by far the biggest gate to G5 engineering for combat ships. It is used in G5 Dirtydrives, G5 Charge enhanced PD and G5 long range weapons. The first 2 are a prerequisite if you ever intend to do PvP, arguably less so is G5 longrange.

Having very high end rolls for the first 2 mods listed completely changes the capabilities of a ship, hence the never ending requirement for CIF.

If you ever throw away CIF you are simply mad!

MEF is much easier to get and only commonly used in G5 overcharged weapons, which imo are less useful than long range or efficient save some specific circumstances.

MEF can be found in missions now, but is easiest gained by following instructions in this thread,

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showt...List-and-Guide-for-Modified-Embedded-Firmware

Just running the bases listed on page 1 of that thread will net you ample.

As for military grade alloys and supercapacitors, High grade USS's in war/civil war systems, independent systems will increase your chances.

Yeah, I've been on the verge of dumping my excess CIF, but just can't bring myself to do it. I've been passing on missions that give CIF though. No point in getting more when you need the space.

Those darned EFCs though, I can't seem to find a single one. Still trying.

I was looking for EFC MEF & CIF picking up the odd mission here and there when i saw them. Then i had a eureka moment and off i went to the famous CEOS SOTHIS systems. Most people go there to do all the data missions to get their FED rank up, I went to get the data i needed. After about 2 hours of jumping between the systems i got 18 CIF 22 MEF and 12 EFC plus 28 Modular Terminals for anyone still wanting to collect them. So if you need data, Modular Terminals and your FED ranking increased thn it's a win win place to go. Hope this helps..

Oh, and if anyone playing the X-Box wants any modular terminals, and cannot be bothered to come and do missions for them, hit me up as i have saved all mine (28 and counting) and you can have them. Nothing needed in return, i have 850+ mil credits so giving away a few of these won't hurt my balance. I will keep them for a day or two until i swap ships at that point i will have to sell them to exchange ships.

Sothis/Ceos wasn't on my things to do list, but if they'll get me EFCs, it's worth a try. +1 rep.

It's purely down to the number of missions you can do per hour. If you are only chasing one item then sods law you won't get many, but as i was after a few items i was getting 1-3 missions per jump that gave me something i wanted. I did not do much board hopping. If the missions on offer gave me something i wanted i just took all data missions and off i went. If no missions gave me a single required item i did a board hop, did not have to do many though. I guess if your after one specific item then you could board hop more for that item.

I finally got one mission with an EFC as a reward. It's at Quince on OneBadHuskerFan's advice. So that's one in a row.

But it shows that it's possible. It's a shame that it takes going to Quince or Sothis/Ceos to do this. I lost count of how many missions I took at Quince to get this one EFC. A thousand doesn't feel like an exaggeration. Oh well. I guess I'll be a billionaire on this account too. Credits aren't the goal, but there are worse side effects.
