It's all part of the anti-Thargoid defences. If the Flower ships try to attack a base they won't know what hit them

Wouldnt count on it. The similarity between skimmers and scavengers....may not be programming laziness, nor their ability to shut down our ships like thargoids....

Come to think of it does anyone really know where skimmers come from? They pop up out of the ground, almost like they are grown...

I assume this is also impacting NPCs.
I'm being very careful approaching ground bases after a near miss a few weeks ago.
Last night I saw a T-7 some way ahead of me get taken out by the station defences shortly before touch down - I suspect a skimmer caught it.. A reminder to continue being careful.

I'll be glad when it's fixed, but I'm not going to fret about it until then. I've landed at many, many ground installations in the last few weeks, and the first time I got hit by the bug was this past Monday night.

A skimmer hit my Clipper while it was landing - shields went out, ship went out of control, and... then I recovered and landed. The base didn't go hostile to me. I don't know if this is because I was well below the speed limit (67) when the impact happened or what. Regardless, I didn't lose the ship.

Well be warned, this isn't only happening at surface bases. I'd been out in the SRV checking some stuff out, and could see a particularly large POI on the horizon (one of those that randomly spawns). So I check it out with my FAS/SRV. As I overflew the corner of the POI site, I got the usual "Trespass Area" warning, and skimmers started raining from above my ship.

None hit me, and even if they had, with no surface base/guns to go hostile over the skimmer murder, probably a rather more survivable situation. Especially with the hull-tanked FAS. But still worth being aware.

So I tried a few more of these POI installations, and even when approaching in the SRV, sometimes the skimmers will clearly fall from the sky, instead of springing up from underground.
