The Long Dark

Yes I just read this on the "What other games are you playing" thread just a little while ago. I haven't played this since the winter time so I'm thinking of getting it updated and checking it out...

Definently worth checking out again. I played a bit of the story mode last night and it's very nicely done (love the art style).

Also the survival mode which I prefer is far more fleshed out, and the maps have had quite a few additions.

One thing that has not changed from earlier versions are those bloody wolves.

You're doing great, tons of goodies in the backpack from a good old scavenge in a local farm house and wham, here's wolfie and his pals scampering along to ruin your flipping day. Ended up without trousers and bleeding in a snowstorm looking for old mans beard. That gets old, quick.

They usually won't attack if you're carrying a lit torch or flare, I walk around with a flare in my hand and light it if I hear a wolf nearby or see one coming towards me, also the flare pistol scares 'em off.

I now have a rifle and 9 bullets, in most games that means you've practically out of ammo, I this game I'm proper tooled up. :D

Haven't had a chance to try the new version out, but are some of the maps still dead ends? I hated roaming around through hell in a map only to find out I can't connect to any other map and have to go all the way back to where I came from...

The older survival maps are like that. Discovery is part of the process. Today I can go from one to the other knowing exactly where I'll end up. Learning the terrain while avoiding wolves and bears is part of the game.

The new Wintermute story maps are basically linear. You can't get to the Ep 2 map until you finish Ep 1. You can't get certain items until they are unlocked by story progression. If you can survive on the original maps, you'l have no issues on Wintermute.

I posted on the Hinterland forums about making a pike out of a broom handle. Charging wolf? Set one end of the pike on the ground, step on it and aim the pointy end at the mad salivating beast approaching at speed. They didn't go for it. I'd wrap a phone book around my forearm to let wolfie chew on that as I stabbed him repeatedly. They didn't go for that either.

Ahhh ok, I've explored the maps so many times that I know which areas I like to avoid now. That's why I was hoping they added more connections and such this time. Not a fan of linear stories either, but I'll still give it another shot then...

It is a very great game. I have some tips regarding how to survive in the long dark based on my personal experience.
After playing this game too much I came to practice different survival skills in this game. I want to share those points which I gathered from my personal experience.
*Navigation is the key in this game.
*Manage the resources.
*Set up Camp and be efficient.
*Prioritize tasks.
These are some general tips I want to give from my experience. Other than this, I want to say be creative and enjoy this game because only the tough one survives.

Yep, it is probably one of the best survivals out there. And without bloody zombies, too. I played this as a casual experience mostly. Then, after visiting each region at least once I tried the hardest difficulty and it quite transformed the game.
