Following a Contact (Newbie help)

Hi Commanders,

I have this mission to assassinate my target pirate.

I go to the system and ping my Advanced scanner.

I get a message to meet a Contact in another system.

I fly to the next system and immediately the Contact MORCAS says "It's been hard to find you. Follow me."

Then he races off leaving a Wake.

Even though I've managed to figure out a few areas where he's been (he starts talking again in the Local chat), it's been an hour and I've had to land to get fuel.

I've no idea what I'm doing wrong. Do I need a Wake scanner? I only thought that was necessary for collecting data?

EDIT: I should say the Contact is trustable (he said so) and I have to get information from him to find the location of the original target pirate.

So it's like this.
After you meet the contact and receive the system in which the mission target is, you go to the system, honk your discovery scanner and you'll receive a mission update.
You'll get a planetary body as the target area and you should supercruise around that body until Mission critical USS pops up. You can select it in the system panel (No need to land, as the location can be around a planetary body with atmo or a gas giant...even a star.). Note, that you should be orbiting close to the body, but not too close to enter orbital flight (in case landable planet).
Drop out of Supercruise and you'll get your pirate right in the middle of attacking a trader with 2 small escorts.

Target the wake he leaves behind, and drop into it as if it were a signal source or station (i.e. slow down and approach until you get the blue disengage message). You don't need a wake scanner. Your informant will be in there, and will give you the location of the pirate. Go there, fly around the target body slowly, and the mission signal will show up (in blue -- check your nav panel so you don't miss it). Drop into that, and there's your target.

The mission had expired! :(

So for future reference, what you're saying is...you fly INTO the Low Wake and drop from Supercruise?
And, there I will find the Contact to speak to?

Yes, that's how it works :)
It's the same as when you drop at a station, get your speed and distance in the blue zone and drop out ! Good luck !
