CZ Auto Assign Side

Currently in CZs, it is possible to drop in, select no side, and freely attack CMDRs who are already engaged, without the risk of their allies fighting back, or gaining any assault/murder bounties.
This is quite broken. And frankly just trolling.

My suggestion is basically, if a CMDR attacks a ship of Faction A, including other CMDRs, in a CZ, without choosing a side, you get auto assigned to Faction B.

This would help prevent unfair ganking of ships in CZs, as well as help out if you forget to pick a side to begin with.

I'm not sure I see the utility such a function. The side fired upon already goes hostile; all this would do is make the side not fired upon friendly until fired upon.

There is also the potential for someone to legitimately consider both sides to be their enemies.

Does it not also influence how much of a threat you are considered aside from handling CMDRs slightly differently?

I've noticed that if I sit unassigned to a faction but hit them, I tend to get far less aggro from ships I haven't chosen to engage yet.

Of course that's 100% anecdotal and 0% factual, so I'd be happy to hear otherwise.

Absolutely.

This actually fixes two problems:

1. Trolls who shoot CMDRs without joining a side.
2. New players who don't even know you *have* to pick a side (there's nothing in the game that tells you so).

This. I didn't know, at first - I only realised the option existed from reading comments on this forum. Even then, I couldn't find the option, since it only appeared when actually in a CZ. I ended up Googling it. Seriously, no-one should have to Google how to pick a side in a fight! :D

If that's the case, then the better fix, IMO, would to treat CMDRs and NPCs the same for such a purpose.

I agree with this. If you shoot a CMDR that has declared for a side, that side becomes hostile to you. You don't auto get assigned to the other side.

When you are (for example) allied with two factions and then you enter a combat zone where both are fighting, does choosing one side over the other effect your ranking/relationship with the other? If so, how much?

As far as I can tell it doesn't. But it probably should.
