Not so sure it will, any more.
More and more Citizens are realizing that throwing more money at this project isn't going to release it any faster.

Tell that to the $40,000 they made in sales yesterday!

The money train for them has no brakes, they have marketed it perfectly (like it or hate it) which is good, because they will need every penny tbh.

And the longer it goes without release the more ridiculous all those previous estimates begin to look.

Nah its good for Star Citizen because you can see how they try to make it perfect and not let themself being rushed by the evil publishers because they dont have any. It just shows how earnest CR is with SC, i can wait for the perfect game to come. I mean we know the so called "jesus patches" delusional gamers and pray for it to arrive, and i doubt he will let jesus hanging their. Afterall Chris Roberts is the savior of PC gaming we just need a bit of faith and maybe a second job so we can give CR more money for our dream to come true.

*shudder*

I see that despite having nothing to show on the VR front, they are still courting the VR press

Yeah yeah mobiglas(TM) is practically job-done for Star Citizen's VR implementation is it?

By now the original 'estimates' have been revealed to be 'pie in the sky' nonsense, and clearly bearing no semblance to reality.

Buy an Idris.

Well I mean the estimates given in the last 6 months, which appeared semi realistic, at least compared to the '3.0 before 2017' one.

To be honest I am definitely not surprised with this latest delays, form other side neither do I feel anger because of it but also there is no more passion or even curiosity.....I think that all my feelings about SC fading away with time......dont know...maybe I complete my SC 7 STAGES OF GRIEF after all........

If the counter was a lie they would have run out of money ages ago.

Which is exactly why the 2015 predictions of implosion haven't yet come to pass, much to the glee of the very same people responsible for throwing all of that money at CIG. Funny how that works.

Meanwhile, I hope no one shows Roberts Hellblade. He would probably be overcome by the possibilities for realising his glorious cinematic vision which have emerged in the half a decade that CIG have spent reinventing wheels and jamming square pegs into round holes. And he would have to recalibrate his definition of "fidelity", which would mean starting over on all of the SC assets. But the longer development drags on, the more outdated and primitive SC will look.

hellblade? please, if anyone want to point at games for cinematic standard, don't point at anything other than hideo kojima's metal gear solid series :D

It is completely hilarious to expect mobiglass to work in VR.

Having your in-game arm right in front of your face, while you are firmly sat at a keyboard and mouse is one of the quickest ways to disorientation, not to mention the disconnect between avatar and player motion - and that road leads to barfbag territory.

It's pretty clear that this is just more poorly understood waffle.

maybe they are just assuming it will work with touch controllers?

They have a larger budget than any other VR game to date, they have also been in development since before the Oculus rift Kickstarter. They have literally had the entire life span of current VR tech to create some kind of proof of concept and integrate it into the game. If they are serious about VR it would be in the Alpha by now. I just don't see how VR is even up for discussion based on this track record?

Well... no. There's actually no reason why their new UI can't work in VR. I mean sure, if it's attached to your arm and animated, no, but if they learn from the hundreds of VR titles out there, most of which have some form of floating 3D UI, they can get this working in VR with little work.

The problem is that the menu UI is only one of several things you need to tackle for proper VR support:

x) Player movement
x) Motion controller support integration with arm/body animation via IK
x) Support for all the different controller types and devices out there
x) Removal or alteration of forced motion transitions when entering/exiting ships
etc.

It's nice that the gaming press realize that VR is not something you can just "bolt on later", but they should call out CIG for claiming that they'll just bolt on VR later until recently.

This always confuses me: How are people, fans or critics, able to guess how much time it will take until a certain version will be released? What is the information basis for these estimates?

It's quite simple. You don't need information on the state of the game. All you need to know is that CIG are able to create new version numbers at will (they have a pipeline for it, I expect), and that the citizens are getting restless. They need to release something labelled '3.0' sometime soon, so they will. The difficult bit is predicting what '3.0' will consist of, beyond a number and a sense of disappointment...

maybe they are just assuming it will work with touch controllers?

I'd pay real money to watch someone try that :D

Running around in FPS with touch controllers, they mobiglass their ship to arrive at their location - it ROARS down in front of them in a cacophony of engine blast and triumphant jingly ditties, the player leaps into the cockpit with furious use of the <<USE>> button, and then for ultra-fidelity-immersion grabs their Star Citizen HOTAS..... and their ship explodes.

Five minutes of grabby-handing around trying to find the touch controllers, or immersion-breaking headset removal, either way it's back to gameplay which mostly consists of how many Commandos can get their underpants to fill your FOV at any given time.

Regarding the render to texture and VR, I think it will cause extra work -
Not only will vr require rendering the normal 3d view twice for the different eye perspective, but also it will have to render the 'hologram' r2t surfaces twice in addition.
:)
