Newcomer / Intro Assistance Required

Evening Commanders,

I've had the game since October of last year and manage to get a few hours in once or twice a week. My current situation is this https://inara.cz/cmdr/75132/ with a ship loadout of this https://eddp.co/u/FVJgnoMw.

My question is as with most on here I'd imagine is what would people recommend I go towards? I'm obviously looking to make a fair whack of cash so that I can buy the bigger/better outfit ships to enable myself to contribute to the game when I get the chance to play.

I love playing this game but would like to maybe have a bit of direction so that I can deploy my time usefully when I get a chance to play.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Yours in space

Commander Jebediah99

Well, first you have probably the best early ship in ED. I would look to upgrade your frameshift drive as soon as possible.
I'd also suggest swapping the size4 cargo racks for economy passenger cabins and run transport passenger missions - these are the one way ones, not the tourist out and back ones, to start with. They pay well for a jump or two, especially if you build some rep with a few factions.

I'm mostly harmless.. get in touch

That sounds like something someone would say at 3am after being out in the clubs [haha]

Awesome, many thanks

Yep, Cobra MkIII is a great ship. As already said, definitely upgrade the FSD as soon as possible, a longer jump range will open up more possibilities.

I'd also look to upgrade the thrusters to take advantage of the fact that the Cobra is one of the fastest ships in the game, and also your shields, as Cobra shields are weak from the get go, but less than 100 Mj won't take many hits before they are gone. You have mil spec hull, but again, for speed and jump range I would go with stronger shields and lighter hull and just run if what attacks you outguns you. No NPC in the game will catch a decently outfitted Cobra.

Regarding what to do, it so much depends on what you like to do (which will also to an extent affect what you do with outfitting). However, getting allied with some factions in a system will give you access to better paying missions, so perhaps set yourself up in a system as a 'home' base and work on your rep. If the factions that you are working for are Fed or Imp aligned then you will also build your superpower rank as you go along.

Many thanks Faded. I'm kinda up for whatever as I enjoy it all. Just kinda want to focus on one thing rather than trying all things and getting nowhere if that makes sense

Yes, I do. :)

ED isn't an easy game if you have limited time to play, so be patient. It looks like so far you have tried trading more than other things, so perhaps the little change to passenger missions will be fun. I don't think there's any one way to make lots of credits which I guess was all I was saying, it's possible to make good credits in all the main occupations, hence the 'do what you enjoy'. :) Credits will come, and hopefully it won't ever feel like a grind.

I still think that upgrading your ship in some of the areas I (and of course Wyaston) suggested will be worthwhile as you will definitely get more out of it. I still have my Cobra MkIII (I've been playing since beta!), and use it regularly for space salvage missions. It's still fun to fly. :)

Edit, just to give you an example, my Cobra has a top speed of 367 m/s and boosts at 524, and jump range is 27.71 Ly (unladen). That is with some engineering...

Fly safe, and don't hesitate to drop in and ask questions.

You're an absolute gent! Managed to try a couple of passenger missions which has made me a fair whack pretty quickly which means ship upgrades coming! Thanks for all your assistance

A few more things:
- the Cobra is reasonably agile, so you might want to try out fixed weapons once you got those thrusters fixed
- the KWS is only useful for bounty hunting, which your ship isn't equipped for (shields and thrusters)
- same for the A-rated sensors. They're only needed to get the weapons on target, but A-rated are heavy and use a lot of juice. At 6 km sensor range and 3 km weapons range, they're pretty much overpowered
- the small MC suffer a penalty against the hulls of bigger ships, the lasers don't get a penalty against shields -> swap for medium MCs and small lasers

^^^^^^^^^^^^ Wot they say ^^^^^^^^^^^

Plus ---- Why pledge in Powerpants if you only have a small amount of time per week to play? I don't indulge in in pledging but I think you might find it more of a hindrance unless you "work at it".

Because I'm lonely and wanted to be part of something?

Honestly, I just did it because I could. Haven't really bothered to do anything with it but just haven't bothered to leave it yet.
