How how how..do you all do it as beginners??

I have my rift all ready to go, new laptop all ready to go, etc.

I am still learning functions and now I am supposed to bind everything to the buttons and never see the buttons?

Just don't see how this is possible! lol

Am I missing something?

LOL I'm sure. I knew I was going to get VR, so I played purposely not using the key board and mouse as much as possible. This gave me the muscle memory I needed for VR. Take your time.

Hotas
Voice attack

I played about 2000 hours of the game with KB+M before I got a rift... I can fly blind :)

Only key I need to remap at this point is my Landing Gear key - other than that, it's all muscle memory.

OP, you may consider remapping some of your keys. I have just about everything needed in a pinch mapped so that my left hand can reach it easily.

Frankly, some of the default mappings make sense from a mnemonic standpoint, but are much more useful remapped. The "J" (Jump) key is a good example. I have it unmapped, and have my F1-F3 keys set up as follows: Low Jump, High Jump, Next Waypoint

Now my full range of jump/nav keys are just above my flight control keys.

See what works for you and give it a go.

*edit*

(Another good use for them (F1-F4) would be pip management keys, remapped from your arrow keys.)

I have a HOTAS.

Z...

This.

I only use the keyboard for the galaxy map to type system names. Luckily i can touch type.
For the rest i use a Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS, a set of Cougar MFDs and t.flight rudder pedals, along with a Logitech G13 game board. A HOTAS would be enough though, the rest is convinient (and looks cool and serious :p).
For those who text me in game, i have a set of makros to tell them that i will accept voice comms, if they want.

Controlling the ship with a regular keyboard in VR can be done, but it isnt the most comfortable experience. My advice would be getting a HOTAS, no matter what model. The Thrustmaster t.flight series gives you a decent setup for a small buck f.e.

I found with VR there are two thing that are a must have are.

1. HOTAS
2. Voice Attack

Voice Attack is a amazing little program and only $10. With these two items, I never use the mouse and only keyboard when typing looking for systems in the galaxy map.

The only other bit of advice I would give any person thinking of getting VR. Is before you take the plunge, is to bind your galaxy navigations keys to your Hotas and practice. Keep using the Hotas as much as possible and in no time at all is becomes second nature.

Welcome to ED in VR it will blow your mind, and say goodbye to your free time. :D

HOTAS and bookmarks are your friend. Congrats. :)

Bought ED during 1.2.
Rift last year.

Bought a joystick.
Took some time to find the throttle and some pedals as the cherry on top.
With vr having a decent control interface is paramount.
I honestly do not recommend anyone to play ED in vr without one.

Probably you will have to start in 2d. And get your controls sorted.

ironically it's the only function i still have on my kb (except galmap and srv) and it's spot on! the 'J' is the key with the notch, it's easily detectable blind, and i only have to reach out for it when my jump destination is obscured by a planet, my regular jump is on the hotas.

yeah, ok, that's just me.

I use a xbox one controller. (one comes with the rift anyway)
Works just fine with the rift.
Also voice attack can help as well if needed.

Doesn't any more.

The new bundle doesn't contain the Xbox controller (and the dongle) or the Oculus remote, they've been replaced by the Oculus touch controllers so most new users no longer get one included (a lucky few got the original bundle that still had the xbox controller etc for the new price, but they sold out weeks ago).

Like some of the others posting to this thread, played on TV for about a year and just picked up the Oculus on sale (WOW!). Picked up the Warthog for Christmas last year and the AussieDroid Profile (2.4) works wonders with very little tweaking! I took my Imperial Eagle through the slot last week at full throttle and 4 pips (448 m/s) [enhanced thrusters with grade 3 upgrade] and only lost a half ring of shields when I hit the back of the dock - crazy fun!

whats the AussieDroid Profile? Something i could use for a X52 HOTAS?

When you say 'buttons', are you talking about keyboard keys? Yeah, that will be difficult with VR. If you can touch type, it's not too bad for comms or typing in navigation searches, but it's probably not too good for quickly reaching and pressing keys. Function and cursor keys aren't too bad for feeling out.

As others have said, a HOTAS (joystick and throttle with lots of buttons) and Voice Attack (voice activation) are highly recommended. Those "buttons", if you put some serious thought about what button does what, are pretty easy to remember. And just being able to say commands for everything else means you rarely need to use the keyboard.

One thing about HOTAS bindings is that you can use the same buttons for several functions. For example, you can use one directional hat to navigate your information panels when they are active, or to select targets in combat. And they can do something else while driving the SRV. And they even have flight landing overrides to do even something else. It just takes some experience to figure it all out.

Tip: the joystick is for flying and firing weapons during combat. Don't put anything on the joystick that you will need to press at the same time you are maneuvering and firing weapons - like directional thrusters, flight assist, boost ... unless you are very dexterous with your remaining fingers (exception is a pinky button if you have one).

After playing with a cheap Tflight x hotas for the last few years, muscle memory makes it second nature. I received the rift on Saturday and have being tinkering with it since on and off on the rig (OC 1070 and 4790k). ED is impressive in VR scale wise, but 4k should really be the minimum for VR for graphic fidelity. The SRV is a stinker for nausea, I used to like ripping up the dirt planet side on the big screen. I`m still a bit undecided in relation to VR, bounty hunting in the res sites is a lot more fun.
