Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Prison Brake (07.08.3303 - 13.08.3303)

Congrats to everyone who flew in the race, and especially to the winners. The flying prowess demonstrated is amazing!

And thanks to AkenBosch for organizing the race. It was a phenomenal course, very interesting.

Wow, I just watched cookiehole's video of his run. Amazing! Those spiraling approaches during glide -- I didn't know you could even do that. And those perfect planet-braking runs -- just wow. He turns crashes into landings, somehow. And he's even got time to text chat while he's racing!

I can only applaud in admiration at the skill. Well done.

Whu? I must have missed those, downloading now. I'm also gonna do a side-by-side of my own iCourier run vs. cookiehole's to try and figure out where the hell I was missing out on an extra 1m51s 'cos I have to say it's got me baffled. I won't bother uploading because it's only of personal interest but if anyone desperately wants a comparison video with their own run then let me know and I _might_ (I'm making no promises) get around to doing it for you.

Actually ... can I get video links for the top 4 Unlimited times and I'll see if I can do a 4-way splitscreener ... that's be pretty cool to see I imagine!

The spiraling glide approaches were actually not planned (and probably slower than a direct approach) but necessary because I had overshot the ideal glide dropout point in OC.
The best planetary approach was probably the first (Bailey Penal Colony) in my Eagle run (starting around 3:25) where I managed to get the speed and dropout locations just right.

Here's videos of my runs, complete with theme music and victory celebrations. Interesting parts are timestamped, and the timestamps are clickable on the youtube page.
I don't really expect many to watch the whole thing, but I personally think the endings of both are good for a bit of amusement. :D

I was very happy with the times, even if they weren't enough for a win. I guess that's the secret zen of Buckyballing I need to achieve. :p

Holy cow that was gorgeous. But how did you manage to enter OC at 600 km/s?

(I always knew cookiehole was HAX! :p )

Does it only apply to vertical speed or something?

Precisely that.

I really should've known that.

That would be super cool!

Well I watched both (of course), the "Spacebear dancing" part sold it for me. :D

Part 1 is on my iPad ready for my train journey tomorrow!

In the meantime, I just watched the comparison video I made of cookiehole's unlimited run vs. mine. His hyperspace countdown for the jump away from the first settlement finished before I'd even touched down on the pad. Those high speed low gradient planetary approaches are an absolute wonder to behold. I really recommend watching his videos, and turn the volume up so you can relate the engine feedback sound with what's happening on screen. It's a real eye opener (and yeah, there was room for improvement too ... unbelievable). So cookiehole, what's the deal with the pauses you make when turning back around in glide mode (rather than one long turn)? Are you preventing some sort of accidental drop out of glide by doing that or are you just doing 4 sides of a notional square to bring you back around towards the base you've overshot.

These are blackouts. A bit of realism (I would love to have an acceleration readout on the HUD) but pretty annoying when doing maneuvers like this. I believe there are also "redouts" when pulling extreme negative g's (like pitching down in an Eagle at full boost or glide speeds).
And yes, there would definitely still be a little room for improvement; my Eagle run had an obscured jump target and was only 3:09 slower than the Courier (3 mins from the jumps, and certainly a few s for each landing and takeoff) :)

I spent another few hours today on "project target obscured" and have the 'Algorithm' figured out. I'm struggling with Excel though since there doesn't seem to be a good way of plotting functions and doing Mathematical Analysis. Maybe I'll try programming the stuff, but that would take some time as I'm not very proficient in coding and have exams during the next few weeks.
I can share my drawings and summarize the theory though; doing the calculations with Excel as far as possible and the rest manually or with a math program seems possible aswell.

Congratulations to cookiehole and to all those who won the 'not as good as cookiehole' places, and to those who just had fun like me. :)

I wish I'd managed to be a little more competitive, I need to get my planetary approach / orbital cruise skills sharpened as I'm fairly sure that a more skilful pilot could have made a run in The Nomad about three minutes faster than mine. I don't think that this was a race that particularly disadvantaged the AspX, so I was hoping to at least get within a couple of seconds of CMDR Jak's excellent Adder time.

I'm going to watch all the videos to see how to do things better, so far I've just watched cookiehole's Crater Creator run - wow...

I'm especially impressed with how you skim over the top of the different orbital zones while getting your vertical speed to the correct levels. It's also nice that your entry into OC at MH wasn't very much different to my final 'too fast for OC' attempt.

I'm glad that I sat back and waited for you to pass after messing up my first landing attempt, your comment about the pads being big enough to share made me chuckle because it serious overestimated my ability to pick my spot in a hurry. :D

OK folks, it's the moment that at least 4 of you have been waiting for!

Presenting, cookiehole vs. bruski vs. drakhyr vs. jak.

P.S. here's the ffmpeg recipe I used for this one:

ffmpeg -i vid1.mp4 -i vid1.mp4 -i vid1.mp4 -i vid1.mp4 -filter_complex "nullsrc=size=1920x1080 [base]; [0:v] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS, scale=960x540 [upperleft]; [1:v] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS, scale=960x540 [upperright]; [2:v] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS, scale=960x540 [lowerleft]; [3:v] setpts=PTS-STARTPTS, scale=960x540 [lowerright]; [base] [upperleft] overlay [tmp1]; [tmp1] [upperright] overlay=x=960 [tmp2]; [tmp2] [lowerleft] overlay=y=540 [tmp3]; [tmp3] [lowerright] overlay=x=960:y=540" -c:v libx264 vid1234.mp4

I just robbed it off the internet and tweaked it a bit. It's slightly odd because it runs for ever (I only spotted this after it had generated a 4.5hr video and was still going!). It's something to do with the "nullsrc" input and the fact that I want the final output to be the length of the longest input video. Anyone got a solution? (I've also asked on the ffmpeg forum).

By the way, regarding video recording - does anyone know how to get AMD ReLive to recognise Elite as a game for recording?

I've given up with OBS for the moment, as I've had trouble getting a smooth recording and also had poor audio. ReLive works fine without any fiddling about and seems better than the older Raptr software, but as it doesn't recognise ED as a game running I had to "record desktop" to make it record - so it's recording any alt-tabbing that I do, rather than just the game window.

I'll do some Googling to look for a solution, just wondering if there are any other AMD users who know how to fix this.

...
Will Polly come screaming in her "Blood Eagle"?

You flatter me, Stern. But I wasn't even close to your time on this one. o7

Awesome, Alec! I'll check it out as soon as I get a reliable internet connection. I'm currently on a vaccation.

Thanks for the race, Aken! High-class as usual!
Congratulations to Cookie, Bruski, Stern and Drakhyr for the podium places. I'm also impressed with Jhyrryl's adder run.

Congratulations to everyone else who had the opportunity to participate in this race and special congratulations to me who is drinking hideous amounts of retsina on a Greek island right now!

Post race analysis note: A real 'inflight' on Mitterand only saves 16 s compared to hit the damned moon at the highest possible speed and wait out the extra cooldown time for the FSD.
