The lore of ED, that great unknown

Not a rant or anything but just some personal thoughts that some of you may also relate to. Or not.

Not all Elite fans were created equal :D In my personal case I must admit I never played any of the old saga games. I am a simple man who likes most space-related things in general and was an avid X-Wing saga player :p .

Now, the Star Wars lore is probably universal, but Elite´s in the other hand, is probably reserved to those of you who followed the games since the 80´s.

I believe that one of the aspects that attracts new player base to a game is precisely that lore. Hard to quantify, but I d dare suggest that the lore behind the game can actually attract as many players as a polished and well balance space sim code and graphics (such as ED!).

I see it in many other forums, for other space sim games around. Players in those forums not yet knowing well ED´s lore claim one of the reason to have chosen that other game is based on things related to that other game´s lore, and how they feel they will have an impact within that lore universe. Reference to factions, details in the lore history or what not help form the basis of the imagination of those players. They start playing the game already in their minds that way, sometimes eons before a game is released.

Now, having said all that, my reflection is that ED´s lore although available to those seeking, is somewhat much more "hidden". The fiction diaries blogs, the new books and some of the links in the fiction sub forum help a lot but I cant help but think ED´s lore needs a bit more of a graphic face and structure to it to compete seriously in "the lore war" in the market.

Maybe this "lore war" is not ED´s priority at the moment, but hey, fwiw.

This is exactly my thoughts, would be nice if somehow
there is a summary of the ED lore that I can read up
and get the big picture, specially what happened and
how we got there since our current present time (20xx)
all the way to ED's era.

I think this is a very good point, actually. I'm not personally bothered about such things, but I can see a strong case for filling out back-story, history etc. on the website for people who want that level of richness and detail.

This will give you some timeline history.

The download page on that site has some additional manuals at the bottom which are good reading to help fill in some of the lore.

EDIT: and there is this page for chapters from the Life on the Frontier books that came with Frontier and Frontier: First Encounters.

Yeah, we know the information is out there, but some official history and game lore on the official website would be nice.

As I said no doubt some will be included on the website as well.

I was thinking of maybe a small wiki or something... like details on factions, corporations, timeline, etc. etc. Not an essential by any means, but something that I reckon would add to the richness of the product.

Based on some old frontier: elite 2 material I have floating around I can give you some general info.

You got two big sides.
Federation and the Empire.
Both are equally **** places to live for pretty much the same reasons. The Empire publicly permits slavery while the Federation will just conscript you if they have a use for you.

Feds are great with robots and cyborg technology while the Empire are big on bio-tech.
That's about all I really remember.
