Criticism and jokes apart, this is a good article to read about SC development cost.

PSA: Gamasutra people understand game development ;)

An interesting intro but I have to say the article fails simply because the author makes the same mistake as all the white knights and fanatics. He compares a released game and its features and mechanics and content with the would-be/non-existant counterparts of Star Citizen. Yes, Star Citizen sounds awesome on paper but it doesnt exist at this moment and is all wanne-be talk and projection. Its a shame that he simply repeats the spiel CRoberts provides.

Buy an idiot.

Anyway - new ATV is up :D

Oh dear. More bugs, more waffle, more mess, nonsensical constructions, rampant pipelining, disappearing pipelines, "deep lore", handcrafted procedural generation, celestial mechanics (soon) and no game.

I asked the lulzbucket for it's opinion, and it merely cried a little in sympathy for the devs.

What is the point of lore with no game?
It is all just waffle dripping in maple syrup, topped with whipped butter. (People waking up in UK will be getting hungry!) :D

You just don't understand waffle development.

Star Citizen will have NPC's queuing up for waffles in mess halls, and players will get to shout at them for using too much syrup - for the immersion. Those NPC's will then panic and clip through seats in an effort to escape your authority. Even the doors will run away into deep space.

It's going to be epic.

Every time I watch an ATV recently, the game development seems to be going continually backwards... Doors escaping the sinking ship? Probably a cunning tool developed by CiG so the rats inside suffocate

I can't disagree with you - but the whole focus on "doors being infrastructure and forcibly containing environments, and destroying them leads to atmosphere equalization or escape" they had a few years ago, seems to have utterly escaped them. What is even more confusing is when they say their doors are more developed and important than many other things in the 'Verse, but yet go on to display that what they had supposedly perfected years ago - is still utter junk.

Maybe Item 3.0 will fix it in 2037.

Re: Outposts.

If they're placing outposts where the scenery is good, ie a gas giant on the horizon, does that mean it's all static? I thought orbits were going to be a thing.

I assume that Cryengine has working doors in its base code. So how did CIG screw it up that badly.

Someone forgot to tell the development team that orbits were meant to be a thing?

Well if you forget to tell another dev house what size things are supposed to be, forgetting to tell someone that the planets are now going to move is pretty trivial. Maybe they were told but it was at the end of a long list of new features Chris had come up with.

Positioning assets based on the view you get from a non orbiting body looks a lot like there are no plans to introduce orbits any time soon.

Umm... wasn't orbital mechanics though one of the reasons given for the 3.0 delay?

Also, in other news, stumbled on a post on reddit where the poster advised someone to wait for 3.0 to drop.

Just wait a little bit. Let 3.0 drop

That was 12 months ago! :D :D :D

Maybe pushing a million? What about the 1,859,997 Star Citizens claimed by CIG? Is that a lie?

Yes. Well, not a lie exactly, but it's not entirely accurate. That number goes up anytime someone creates an account with CIG, which includes free weekends, forum access and those with multiple accounts.

Their quick fingered legal eagle and part-time horror movie villain Ortwin Freyermuth said last year that the actual number of paying customers was in the region of 500-600k.

So it's a lie.
lol

Look at you lot, discussing orbital mechanics like CIG is going to manage to implement them anytime soon.

Reminder that this is the same developer that had to disable the spinning ring on a space station because they couldn't get it to stop glitching out, had to disable their tutorial because they couldn't or didn't want to fix it, and still can't get doors to work. Oh, and unless something has changed their engine still can't tell the difference between atmosphere and vacuum so your commando can go for a spacewalk in his space pants.
