Modern science fiction or rather syfy () has nothing in common with authors like niven so you're probably right about that.
Now it's mostly about story, plot arcs/plot twists now, the science has stepped into the background.
People who grew up reading modern science fiction will have a hard time reading stuff made by niven, since he's all about explaining the science behind what happens in his books, or at least make it believable, characters and plot are not his priority.

Regarding rishathra we'll have to wait and see how thargoids look like.
On the other hand you can always make them put on a nice dress and get some booze, as long as they count as hominoid.
