Long Trip. Help. Me.

How do I stay sane on a trip to the Galactic Core? Somebody please humour me and keep me from losing my mind from complete boredom

:D

Don't just limit yourself to 'getting there'. Slow down from time to time and have a look around. You might see something shiny you would have missed, or even have an idea for a little side-project.

Besides that, here are a few suggestions for 'distractions' (makes trottling down during the jump even more important):

I always have a movie/sporting event on in the background.

With the game in windowed mode I surf the net.

Always break up journey with some SRV work for jumponium etc.

Always try to finish a plotted route on a black-hole.

Visit POI's en route.

Get in the RP mood.

In general though I just enjoy sitting down for an hour after a busy day and relaxing. For me the journey IS the fun.

Sorry. Your sanity is forfeit on any long deep space voyage. ;)

Watching a movie or TV is a distraction that can cost you your ship if you're not careful. I do it sometimes but not often.
I never or very rarely listen to music since (for me) it interferes with hearing subtle ship sounds.

You can join fleetcom and find someone to talk to or meet up with to break up the monotony.

I think it's worth emphasising the "in the background" aspect of TV watching. Background music, TV or whatever can reduce the monotonous aspects of the journey. In my experience monotony and the inevitable drifting off to sleep has caused me more danger/damage than being distracted by the TV (which has never happened).

Of course all this is "IMO" and personal experience so as everyone is different... :D

Yeah, I've found myself dozing off more than a few times.
When that happens I usually log off and go to bed.

I also have a safety jump macro built in to Voice Attack that automatically throttles to zero upon exiting hyperspace.

Make a list of things you want to find on the way. Then every 10-20 jumps or 500-1000 lys meander around the GalMap using the filters to see if one of the things you want to find is nearby.

And podcasts. Podcasts and music are your friend.

I like that! +1

..... I even wrote a song for that....

Jump!Safety-Jump!
Ah we can jump if we want to, we can leave your friends behind
Cause your friends don't jump and if they don't jump
Well they're are no friends of mine
I say, we can go where we want to, a place where they will never find
And we can act like we come from out of this world
Leave the real one far behind,
And we can jump!

I'll keep my hat thank you very much.

I have been listening to a LOT of music and an 8 hour podcast. Every so often, I stop at the really big stars, seen some pretty hot blue stars that I stop at and take a screenie. I take like 15 minute breaks after 1000 ly's because my hands get so sweaty and dry, this journey is actually causing me real pain [noob]

I've already listened to an entire 80's top hits playlist and gone through many many cups of tea and about 20% of a long podcast, I've occasionally got distracted and emergency dropped around a star, I've used like 4 heat sinks and I'm not even halfway there yet :D

I've stopped at a few binary systems for pretty screenies, I think I'm extremely impatient too, I love space and the immensity, but I'm also extremely restless haha, I stupidly took a passenger mission for 41 mil to go to the centre, I have the biggest regrets [noob]

Thank you for the suggestions, anything will help at this point, I'm losing it :)

I liked it at first, then came the slight boredom, then music, then podcast, then more music, I'm still travelling from when I posted this yesterday, I'm posting on forums to relieve some boredom, I love this community's, well, communication[big grin]

Onionhead. GunnerBill do you do the one headphone on one off thing when your watching the tv? :)

Oh yeah, not so much now I'm exploring as I don't need VA commands on the mic but back in the day!

One hot ear and a lobsided hair do. Can't beat that ;)

How about using in game tools to stay "sane". :p

Joke on side, I suggest flying above or below galactic plane (+/-1000Ly) in area infested with white dwarfs, black holes, neutron stars, red and orange giants, carbon stars... Simply switch to realistic mode to spot shiny objects.

This is for me at least more interesting then jump, honk, jump..

I don't like SRV, but some people do, so find a nice and interesting planet to land and to brake routine.

And most importantly don't fly to a destination, fly in a direction but without a goal. Rushing to a destination will spoil any fun you otherwise could experience.

Currently I'm on final strech of my longest journey so far (not a record braker but long for me - 50k Ly), and I avoid rushing to goal, every time I do rush, I feel same as you explained .

hope this helps

Sanity on long journeys? That is a luxury, not something to be expected. lol ;) :D

I play in VR, so things that require videos or second monitors are not worth the trouble for me. So what I do is listen to a lot of music, and make an effort to stop and look at things periodically. I spend a lot of time looking out the window while waiting for the FSD to spool up. For this reason, I like to plot routes through nebulae, even if the nebula isn't the actual destination (though I often use them as destinations too). I make a point of landing periodically, and explore around craters in the SRV.

After a while the travel becomes relaxing rather than tedious, and I don't mind the distances so much.
