Star Marine was only released to counter criticism and under much protest from senior staff. The development of it was an absolute nightmare due to demands for things like bullet trajectories calculated from the barrel of the weapon .The engine change discussion that I mentioned a few pages back happened in a meeting during Star Marine dev and was a real option being discussed.
The criticisms of Gamescon presentations is not that they aren't "amazing" but that they are standalone r&d tech aka "fake" or unrepresentative of the project, or disingenuous.
Underline stuff is completely made up and laughable to just think about.
Bold stuff is ofc another attempt to put a blinder on what CIG show's are for: Showcasing game development, direction and the overall vision of the game while generating interest, media awareness and expanding it's player-base and funding.
Must be strange to be so apathetic about things, I don't know how you can do it.
I' not really being apathetic but being
Realistic and Pragmatic.
It's easy really when you focus only in the game development part and ignore the made up fluffy drama around it.
In CIGs case, especially so. One would think though, for a company that claims to openness and honesty in addition to "the pledge", marketing and development would be closely aligned. The greater the difference, the more backers are being misled. Its one thing to mislead people through marketing when your dev funds are coming from other sources, its another to mislead the people providing you with the funds.
With any company, not just CIG. Game development is bound to delays so it's hard to plan marketing campaigns for it. That's why we see so many game's missing their release dates on and on and we even have games that get completely canceled after a big marketing campaign. (Scalebound).
CIG development is indeed more open than most. It's part of it's crowdfunding promise to it's community and a way to generate interest and funding. It's marketing done right and being replicated by a lot of indie studios rightly so. Yes written right there in the The Pledge:
https://robertsspaceindustries.com/the-pledge
It's also written clearly in the website before any transaction that the game is in alpha version and being developed. The backers have clear info about the state of the game, added to that there's plenty of footage on youtube, streamers and even Free-Fly week's to access the state of the game.
So, basically not much in the way of professions then. Even trade sounds suspect if they are only putting in the mechanics for transferring cargo.... has there been any mention of an actual economy to make trading worthwhile?
So, you don't know if any of that is coming right? Its just wishful thinking. Plans don't equal reality
As long as there's new stuff it's progress to me. It's kinda easy to miss but most of the game mechanics that get priority are the ones used for Squadron42 so that's why some features have priority above other's (hint hint FPS, Manual Cargo, Holograms, Facial Animations, Shop's and Cloathing etc).
You asked I gave my assessment based on the info available. We saw CIG teasing Nox Racing, the Buggy Racing variant and they already implemented the race track in arena commander back when Arena Commander release. We were shown working on roads for their planets. Could make sense that's it, not wishful thinking because I couldn't care less if they add it or not tbh. It's CIG call not mine. Ultimately it's them who get to decide what's the best for the game because it's them who have inside knowledge to do so.
A great life quote
"plan's don't equal reality" That's why one should allways manage it's own expectations accordingly and don't take everything as "promises".
Ah, the good old "x doesn't understand software development". Its amazing how many developers, QA people, project managers, are told by SC fans they don't understand software development. I've been told i don't understand software development many times on the SC reddit.... as someone who works in a software development company and spent a few years as a project manager
Yeah... about that. The problem is not really "understanding software development" but "understanding GAME development".

Yes, its so hard, that there is no seamless transitions in NMS and Hellion and other games..... oh, wait! More like its not done in all games because that's not what they are trying to make in those games.
Indeed, even Star Citizen hasn't been produced yet. If anything like what CR has pitched to backers over the years is ever produced, then i'll be amazed.
Have you played NMS or Helium? I like Star Citizen because it allows me to group up with my mates jump on a space ship and hop on a turret or with my shotgun and just go blow other players and steal their stuff. Does it look like something you can do on NMS or Helium?
Indeed. Many companies are full of some of the best people in the business. My company also has some of the best programmers and engineers in the business also. Its all irrelvant if the captain of the ship keeps changing direction on a whim.
Yes, but he's the guy in charge, and when he says jump, he expects people to ask how high.
Yes it's thanks to Chris Roberts that a game like Star Citizen is even being attempted. Bless him I guess.
The way I see it, CiG and CR are stuck between a rock and a very hard place. They can't release what they have and another delay is out of the question.
Backers are pulling their funds in ever increasing numbers as it is...usually in the range from a few hundred dollars to concierge packages then buying back in with starter packs... if at all.
Kinda overacting a bit on the "drama"no? CIG and CR are in "Gamescom mode". Being able to interact with the fans and showcase all the hard work is an amazing experience for devs. Getting some millions more and new backers doesn't hurt either.
Just browsing through the stretch goals, and a few things struck me for the first time.
1) New ships apparently cost 1 million to make if the stretch goals are to be believed
Do yo really think making a fighter pilot would cost the same as making a capital ship? Or that the value of the stretch goal corresponds to the feature? Or even that the initial amount is enough to make a game? That's not how crowdfunding works.
3) They knew they wanted to do full planets, not just restricted landing zones in April 2014.... so all those comments from fans about the expanded scope of 3.0 due to proc gen planets and how CIG initially planned fixed landing zones are 100% horse manure.
This is what says in the April 2014 Stretch Goal:
- Procedural Generation R&D Team – This stretch goal will allocate funding for Cloud Imperium to develop procedural generation technology for future iterations of Star Citizen. Advanced procedural generation will be necessary for creating entire planets worth of exploration and development content. A special strike team of procedural generation-oriented developers will be assembled to make this technology a reality.
Emphasis on "Future Iterations of Star Citizen".
On a side note. The funding chart is in a bit of a slump at the moment, although guess some people are still paying subscriptions and buying ships. I guess a lot of people are waiting for 3.0 before deciding whether to invest more.[/QUOTE]
Funding chart is business as usual before a big presentation when backers know that new ship's will be announced. It's allways been like that.
You know what makes me wonder how CIG is planning on making money after their project is finished. If they rope in everyone and their grandmother during the funding, who's gonna buy the game? Or are they planning it to be super inclusive to all demographics? Not if the fancyful dreams of CR are to be believed...
On this thread alone there's plenty of posters that have confessed their interest in the game but are waiting for it to release to decide. And that's what you could call "hard-core space sim gamers". Ofc there's plenty more of the casual gamers that wouldn't ever dare to risk into crowdfunding. Making money after release will come with the Credits selling while trying to fight the parallel "chinese" gold market that comes with all MMORPGS.
As other's said. Besides the announced limited credit sale per month and Squadron42 Ep 2/3.. they still have ship skins, weapon skins, suit skins, fish, furniture, decals, housing... On a later note major paid updates to the Star Citizen universe adding new playable races / opening new systems should be a thing.
Paging Skizomeuh... That's surely another sig-worthy quote.
CIG need to have something actually integrated and playable at this point, even if it's not finished and stable... Just showing off "The Daymar Experience" is surely not enough. From a "marketing reality" point of view: they've gone from showing something off on-stage, to letting people play something similar in a controlled environment at their booth ... in a year.
I think you might be right. I made a prediction at the beginning of this year that it would be the last year for CIG. I am surprised they have lasted this long (though I shouldn't be really as I am constantly surprised by how they keep going against all logic). The result of Gamescom may decide whether my prediction was right or not.
Well I guess they do have something to play at Gamescom after all...
Also It's quite laughable that since my opinions cant be countered with actual logic some resort to taking phrases out of context to try to ridicule them only for them to be proven right as more time passes. That's also the beauty of it, time takes no prisoners.
And once again it seems that what could not be done is being done, what didn't existed exists after all. again.
