News Elite Dangerous 2.4 Closed Beta now over

Wait, what? Are you saying that those of us who may be out around Colonia won't be able to sign up for the open beta?

No.
That I will presume the T10 will only be available, initially certainly, in the bubble somewhere.
Also, decent modules for any ship (A-rated) are not stocked in the Colonia area.
This is for your regular career. Don't know how (or if?) access will work in the beta.

Have i to uninstall my current installation or it will be updated?

Don't uninstall anything!!!!! especially your Frontier Elite 'product' folder

If you downloaded the closed beta all the files (15gbytes worth) are still there. The Launcher is just not showing the folder "PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64" in the \Frontier\EDLaunch\Products subdirectory

When the open beta happens it will use the same directory and just update the missing or new files. Saving you a massive download.

What I do
----------------------
As soon as the Closed beta started downloading, I cancelled it( it said it would take 2 hours to download).
I copied my normal Elite 15Gb folder into the folder "PUBLIC_TEST_SERVER_64" that the beta.

I then run the beta launcher Beta 'Update' button.
This saves time for a slow(or fast) downstream bandwidth connection and it also completes faster as it only needs to check downloaded the files that had changed or are new.

I've done this for every new beta and it works every time. {you don't need to do this for the incremental Beta bug fix Patches. You should just update when the launcher button prompts }

An installation log file is created automatically so you can see what the install actually does.

-------------------------------
NOTE

Edit: #1 The problem is when the data is held in big compressed datafiles, one small change would change the whole data file. This means with a major beta release almost all files change and need downloading to update them. But smaller updates don't need all the files changed so then it will be quicker to download.

Edit: #2
One relevant change is that the game file names are now encrypted (in the win64 assets folder). So no more easy spoilers from that direction again.
This also the reason why the files are all mostly all being download again. The update program can't separate small changes and has to download the big encrypted files every time

To answer your question if you are not a beta tester, just click Update :D

Omg, where that beta? How long can we wait? Given that again there will be no normal content. Why did you need to close the closed beta, if you could replace it open

So this raises an interesting question that I was wondering about the other day.... what happens to all the BETA files when the BETA is over? Do they get uninstalled automagically or do they remain there potentially taking up loads of disk space? I know the old 2.3.10 BETA line has disappeared from the Elite Horizons Game Launcher but does anyone know if the files get removed?

So people who paid for the privilege to access closed Beta get only 3 days. Does that mean open Beta will be a day and a half?

I hardly got chance to do anything on the Beta due to work and family commitments.

This has now got me asking the question, will I bother with paid Beta access if the next season of ED has it? Probably not, I won't be mugged twice.

I also agree. Paid access, got 3days and actually had time to test but 3days was really short...

But hype needs to be built and fdev needs to get players back playing even if it is beta. Then they continue on Live.
Wont be bothered by this but will think twice in the future ;)

I always thought paying for beta if it is to "play" the game was crazy..... I paid for beta to support the development of the game, and a bit of a cheeky preview was the cherry on the icing on the cake.

I do agree you SHOULD think twice about paying for beta if you were doing it to get into the game early..... That said, this is the 1st major (as in very early) open beta, and i can only assume it is because they need as many folk as possible to stress test their back end..... with this in mind, would anyone really rather FD released an inferior product just to keep the beta testers happy?

i just want the actual game out asap in as good a state as possible, and if this means giving it to the masses to stress test sooner rather than later, then bring it on.

isnt 2.4 going to be a staged release anyhow? it could be there will be more closed betas over the coming months? (total guess, i have no idea)

PS all that being said, do we know yet if beta will be live for this weekend?

They've been a bit tight-lipped on it, haven't they?
Maybe this weekend, maybe Tuesday. They won't want to lose too much testing time if it's going live in a week or so. But Monday is a bank holiday in the UK, so who knows.

Of course they get removed.
When or, if you remove them.

its all a bit strange really.... they must have known a lot would moan with a 3 day closed beta...... IF they were not ready to go live with the open beta yet, i wonder why they didnt just keep the closed beta running, even if only to keep the restless (beta backers) natives happy.
