Zieman is correct, OP.

If you look at your picture, you'll notice the other orbit line of the giant. Both these stars are sort of co-orbiting each other around a Barycenter.

Next thing for you to do would be to sit where your ship is/was and record video and turn it into a timelapse - you'd see what is happening then.
 
In reality there would be a high chance for a Type 1a supernova which aliens could use to measure the distance from their Galaxy to Milky Way.
