Reinstalling Windows has been a REVOLUTION to my gaming performance

Nothing we haven't done many times before.
And it was about time regardless.
My OS drive was so inflated I had barely a few gigs left.
And I move all library folders off to a storage drive.

As for backups, can't do anything loosing anything at all.
Seems I have forgotten to backup my voice attack, and I'm starting to suspect my voiceattack license was bought with an email account on a domain I have now let lapse and no longer exist...

Gave a quick test in elite, just undocking from a station, and I'm not seeing that huge a difference, although I am running some rather cranked settings.
HMD-q 1.5, SMAA, and Ambient occlusion to medium or something.

You have to compare like for like, what were your settings before?

Duplicating those now, just also need my VA etc etc in a roughly working order first.

And yes, I'm testing with live, not beta.
Which I got working last night via re-downloading it cleanly instead of upgrading from the closed one.

But I will have re-install that too today I guess.

Here's a toast for 300Mb\s internent with no download caps :D

bah you are wrong! It will last!

Not sure what you mean by reprojection?

I think it's called ASW on the Oculus? On the Vive it's Asynchronous Reprojection - it's the thing that kicks in if the frame rate drops below 90 that forces it to 45 and inserts the frames in between artificially.

Also do you have any supersampling set on the Oculus software, or are you letting the game handle all that?

Thanks for the post, either way :)

Ah, ASW is set to automatic, the game handles all settings, thanks to you too

Curious you have FX qualiity set to low, is that not something that matters much in VR? I always set it high but if im honest, i havent noticed much difference, just habit :)

Just a quick pointer that I have done all of that, in many ways, I work in IT and I know what I'm doing and know lots of tricks and take good care of my PC.

Still saw these results.

It's pretty well established that format and reinstall is not a nuclear option but something that really makes a difference, so not sure why you say that.

Also, the very point of a fresh start is not to keep your tweaks and settings, but to get rid of everything. Something like clonezilla will maintain lots of the issues.

Well if you're claiming a 50-100% increase in performance because you didn't reinstall your OS in 5 years, I doubt thats taking good care of your PC. I just don't understand going 5 years unless its a mission critical system, but if you're playing games on it I doubt thats the case.

Anyway like I said theres simply no reason to go that long without a reinstall on a home/consumer rig. Windows 10 is stupidly easy to reinstall and unless you have an awful net connection you can be up and running within an hour easily.

Weirdly enough as a pc engineer we always recommend a reinstall on motherboard changes etc and always recommend a reinstall not a upgrade :)

Did some playing last night and it does seem better. But wouldn't necessarily call it revolutionary.
I'm nowhere near being able to dial it up as high as TS with hmd q at 1.5 and most other settings at ultra.

Basically triggers ASW far too much for my liking so I am back to tweaking.

I just set it to low because I don't like the lens flairs at high, and that's the only way to get rid of them.

I'm a bit worried as now that I think about it, what unwanted software could be slowing down my graphics card performance? The only thing I can think of is remote viewing software...

Well in my testing the fx setting is one of the more resource heavy, along with ambient occlusion and shadows.
Apart from supersampling that is.

I have done some more testing and even though after the reformat it is noticeably better.
Something in my setup just seem to be utterly allergic to supersampling (I'm only talking about hmd-q).
If I leave that at native levels I can get 90fps mostly.

But if even apply 1.25 it becomes borderline unplayable in some areas. Like srv driving around settlement starports.
Now I know that is some of the worst places performance wise. Hence why I do it.

Something is either very wrong with my rig. Or I am very very picky about ASW artefacting.
Not that it matters. I get 149.7 fps average in the heaven benchmark at 1080p.
And that was before the reformat.

I am perfectly happy with ASW so yeah, that's the difference between us. So long as I get 45fps I am happy, and so I can pull of 1.5x

It is even more perplexing that sometimes. The artefacts from ASW is blatantly obvious.
And other times the drop from 90 fps is practically imperceptible.

If you get warping where straight lines cross textures, that's ASW, if you get any skipping or microfreezing, that's it going below 45

Installation directory/Products/elite-dangerous-64/GraphicsConfiguration.xml defines quality separately for: LightCones, LensFlares, Debris, ParticleEffects, Trails, Beams, and Fog, for each of the settings levels, in the <FX> section. (EDIT: Pretty sure it worked, last time I changed there - could be rambling about in confusion...)
