I'm going to look for some positive too.

For me even if SC does go South (and it will ) I do think there's something in the face recognition system. CR will probably make a lot of money with a webcam optimised for VOIP (was it?) which doesn't cheer me up especially as I'm definitely not a personal fan but I can imagine that technology becoming ubiquitous in time and he's in early. For me, especially if there's data gathering to teach a neural net a good eyebrow shape for a given mouth shape, for translation to your VR experience there's some value for the world at large. Or putting it this way, wouldn't mind that kind of capability in ED if the time ever comes, because while webcam puppeteering's not a brand new technology, it is unusual in games and a step towards seamless interaction, so surely on cutting the edge. And I think cutting the edge does count for something.

The mission gameplay we saw, the physics, the character animations? Horrible. Really, really bad even discounting bugs but I do think we've just seen the future in respect of face mapping, especially because even the special hardware, is going to be way cheaper than VR kit.

I honestly think that Croberts Faceware Announcement will go silently down to the drain in time....Who else remember 2015 HOTAS and Madcatz?

How do you optimise a webcam for foip?

Cheap mobiles can do this with an app?

It's been a long time since my computer vision courses but the optimisation surely comes in filtering the image in software. I can't see anything that you could do in hardware without applying something to the subjects face.

Maybe someone will buy one and take it apart.

You realize tho that CiG is not walking a fresh unused path in this regard? There are software companies out there which develop and build this tech for years already and many of them are much better suited to progress and use their programs in games to come. CiG simply tries to jump on the gravy train in this regard selling other peoples efforts as their own. Same as with so many ingame features that are lacking or given up over the time I have no doubt that face recognition tech will never be "finished" nor ready to sell to outside parties.

...I dont have the Idriss's specs nor do I feel like looking them up but do whatever we saw match the supposed scale of this thing?

The Idris is about 240m long and 1600 tonnes. It's not supposed to be 'that' big. Similar to a modern naval destroyer or light carrier (though those are all much heavier) not a Star Destroyer or something.

This image shows a fighter in the landing bay. As you say, it's a tight squeeze.

Wow, spot the paid Shillizen article right there! So.. how much did they pay PC Gamer for this?

If you believe the article is an honest opinion or not (I thought it was well balanced) One thing to keep in mind is that of the thousands watching the live stream very few will be undecided customers, so as far as getting new backers to spend money the live demo is probably not very effective. The $500,000 + raised yesterday was I'm guessing mostly ship sales to current backers.

The PC gamer article will be viewed by a much wider audience and will lead to lots of new backers signing up.

Interestingly the article was not written about the live demo but about a personal interview/demo by CR to the journalist. As CR was doing that all through gamescon, I expect a lot of new backers will sign up as a result of that and similar articles. So a job well done as far as SC are concerned. As this thread has a limited audience any comments here are like spitting into the wind in the bigger picture.

So essentially it is ~30% bigger than the large ships in ED.

its "nice" only compared to what other games produce

To be honest, i'm not seeing anything particularly different in terms of graphics to what you can see in dozens of other games these days. Yeah, its nice, but still limited by what our comps can handle, which is already pretty nice. And if anything, i feel in some areas, the graphics are starting to look a bit dated.

And this is something that i'm pretty set on by now. They have so much technical debt, by the time they get to the effective 1.0 release, many aspects of the game will indeed be behind the times. They are already refactoring ships to make them look more modern. I think sooner or later they either release with out of date looking graphics in areas, or they get stuck in refactor hell.

Does anybody know how the two builds, gamescom public showfloor and presentation, are related to each other? Is this the same piece of software and they just activated all the features that were missing in the other one?

I'm not entirely convinced they are related to each other at all ;)

So let me recap this, they said that the 3.0 (really 2.7 but who's counting) that was playable is coming in only a matter of weeks. So pretty soon I can straighten all my ethernet cables and whisper sweet nothings to my modem to get the no doubt mammoth download underway and fly around and try it for myself.

I honestly cannot wait. (partially cause of the potential lulz and partially because I've learned that waiting on SC is a fruitless endeavor so I seriously cannot wait.)

I wouldn't hold your hopes up for this year. Maybe Citizencon, maybe Christmas.

And ETAs are back on the schedule. Alpha.0.0.3.0 is now pushed back to 2nd week of october at the earliest.

But... but... it was a good idea for CIG to remove the deadlines! I was told many times by fans how it was a good move. Does this now mean it was a bad move? I'm so confused!

My work is in image processing and yes it is all done in software. You just need a nice camera (but even a cheap 10$ one will work).

See my post on FaceRig, this tech is already out there. And looks better than what CIG have done.
