Star Citizen Thread v6

I hope some of you programmer types on here pick up on one of the lines quoted from Chris above;
"essentially the core of CryEngine was never built to simulate this many items and objects"

This is just over one year ago, the engine simply cannot handle what is being asked of it.

Chris just can't help himself, he said during Gamescom that he wouldn't give a date and just 2 days later here he is giving a date... which pushes it very close to Citizencon territory, surprise, surprise...

And then he'll give a brand new reason why the date wasn't met. It's crazy, I'm going through a load of stuff looking for that Erin quote and you can get a feel for it - feature gets talked about, hype created for feature, date given for feature, feature delayed, excuse for delay given, community repeat excuse, new feature comes along....

I mean you can see them going from "we are focussing on Squadron 42 stuff" in 2016 and that being used as an excuse all over the place, then Squadron 42 is mia so now you get 'item 2.0' and networking as the new excuse, and then a year later SQ42 is still missing so Chris gives "polish" and "AI" as the excuse for no SQ42...

And still the new networking is missing, ships are still being refactored for item 2.0 (one by one it seems, like each ship is hardcoded) so there are excuses for the excuses - I'm not making this up! X is the reason for Y being delayed, and Z is the reason for X being delayed!

We know for a fact that 3.0 is coming out before the end of December.

Chris Roberts himself said as much, at Citizencon last year.

$deity - even the Hobbit - a text adventure - played itself if you did nothing.

I'm not sure Thorin sitting down and singing about gold was really AI at its finest, but at least it was memorable :)

Even if we accept there has been progress as listed, that represents a year's work. Using that as the example, how many more years will be required to generate what might be generally accepted to be a working game? Given the more that goes in, the more complicated it will be to connect and balance everything, it don't look pretty.

This face tracking thing is fun but as mentioned, pretty unnecessary lol
The camera may be infrared to get a nice even texture of the face regardless of lighting conditions, something like the old playstation eyetoy!
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeToy

Edit: by infrared I mean it's simply had the normal webcam filter removed (ccd's are sensitive to infrared and have a filter to remove it) and an additional infrared filter added (filter out the rest of the spectrum)

That's a really well-written post, bringing up real concerns, albeit in a tongue-in-cheek way. There must have been many backers who have "passed on" during Star Citizen's development, and there will be many more before it comes out.

The sad part is the humourless comments from volunteers for the Ministry of Truth seeking to belittle the post. Open discussion must be suppressed.

Frosty I know that in the past you have asked me not to reply to your posts as I make you feel uncomfortable. But I really do not understand this quote
"2012 " Invented by Croberts, stolen by time travel"

I am fairly certain that CR did not invent it and in fact credited another company with its development this weekend could you expand please.
I have never said that about you Bob.

What I said here was that it's nothing new, but is being marketed as something new and exciting and an amazing thing that CIG has done - it's not. It's old tech and has been done many times before. At best it's proof that they know their core audience don't really follow other games.

I have enjoyed following and documenting every step of this project more than you will ever know, and I haven't put in a single cent.... ...This is why I can see the huge marketing success on one side and the huge technical failures on the other - really the makings of a fantastic read/watch one day.

Sounds like you have the makings of a very interesting book and/or dissertation there. I've long thought there is a good degree in comparing Elite, NMS and SC, covering aspect of technical, management, publicity and the dynamics of crowds.

I look forward to reading it one day. Have some vrep as I can't rep you again.

Thanks! I think it's given me an amazing insight into the community stuff. It's territorial, it's filled with war/battle references, hierarchies, leaders, followers - but the really interesting part to me is how beautifully and candidly CIG have exploited this monetarily. My hunch is that basing the marketing out of LA, or perhaps their relationship with Ortwin has enabled them to pull on and learn from some serious sharks.

CIG were the first to exploit fundraising in this market in this way. It says something about the psychology of gamers too and one surprising thing I learnt is that it's the older guys who tend toward confrontation. This is a generalization but it's accurate and I've been thinking about it a lot.

All of this is interesting by itself, but set against a backdrop of serious technical failures and project mismanagement, it's absolutely fascinating to me.

I had attempted to steer discussion in the thread in this direction because it's the part of the project that interests me the most and I would love feedback - but it's off topic and I agree it doesn't belong here.

However I'd love this post to stay as it kinda shows where I'm coming from and why I'm a little obsessed with documenting it. It's a genuinely fascinating phenomenon happening in the middle of my favorite hobby.
