Fact that other game have it worse...Sure, but point to the case - it doesn't give FD excuse either. Personally I think it's cool, but anyone can exercise their right to be skeptical.
I don't think he's complaining it's unreasonable, rather the tone is very different compared to their reporting on that other game.

There does seem to be a certain level of cognitive dissonance out there.

I searched for the word gamestar in this thread but didn't find it so it looks the info I found is relevant/new. gamestar.de is a german gaming website and it has an excellent coverage of ED. I'm a dutchie but can read german fluently. I've used google translate to see how it did translate. The results are pretty good. The translation is easiest if you install an addon for firefox or chrome - or what ever browser you are using.

Lots of ED info. German
Review PB 2. 4 pages. German
Small interview with David Braben. German. DB with Elite baseball cap.
Small interview with David Braben. English - translated with Google translate.

The PB 2 review is honest, paints is a good picture, has some Elite 1984 info. Its also quite positive BUT they are looking forward for Standard Beta 1. They rightfully say that PB 2 is just a skeleton of things to come, especially grinding is not that enjoyable. They also cover Slopeys BPC trading tool. The tool which made me continue testing ED. I just say flattened PB1 market....

I can imagine that with such coverage there will be a flood of new players for SB1, which imho ED deserves. The price of SB1 is right, much better - for the casual gamer interested in space games, with no Elite nostalgia as a baggage ;-) I hope you find the info useful.

Heh... DB is a gentleman:

Manual translation of the last bits:

GameStar: What do you think about the WingCommander games?

David Braben: Those were great story-based games. I found the long cutscenes to be disturbing the game flow, which is why a Wing Commander game is as much of a movie as it is a game. But for the time, they were beautifully put together, and they were great games.

GameStar: I only have money for one game, why should I buy Elite Dangerous instead of Star Citizen?

David Braben: Both games will be great, but with different focus I think. The original Elite was the first open world game, and Dangerous goes an astounding step further with it's 400.000.000.000 star systems of the milky way which you can explore and play in, with it's enormous dimensions and natural spectacles, which can only come from realistic physics.

We are very far along with Dangerous, after Beta 2 we're going towards Gamma phase. I'm a backer for Star Citizen and I'm looking forward to playing it, but they say it's going to be at least a year.
Maybe you should buy Elite Dangerous now, and then save up for Star Citizen until it is released.

I wonder if he means with beta 2 that standard beta will get 2 releases before gamma hits, or if he just means Beta 2 as in PB = 1, StB = 2.

And conversely, Elite mentioned by Chris Roberts recently here. "You know, Elite Dangerous looks great, right, and they're out there, but they're not even close to the level that we are, partly because we've put this vision out there, and everyone says "That's ******* crazy, but you know, I would love to see it happen." And I think people are signing up for that."

I expect Elite to be getting shedloads of good press around the holidays. Looking forward to 29 July!

I was about to post a story that I found online about E: D but the story has been pulled.
The reason, the author had comments that he should kill himself because he made a few mistakes in the article.
I knew there were a few nutty zealots around here but that's taking it too far.
If you can't take a bit of criticism about the game to the degree that you're calling for someone to take there own life then you have serious problems and you need to take a step back. It's a game!

Yeah, some people acted shamefully, I am saddened. I know those are few rotten apples, but they can spoil a lot.

I agree that it's unacceptable. I would have expected that from 'other' communities, I think this is the first incident of this type.

The author in question corrected his mistakes quite quickly as they were pointed out to him by them.

One of the things that we're going to notice is that there will be 'some' journalists who would like nothing more than to stir up bad feeling between our game and the communities from other games because that will generate more traffic for their site.

Can I ask that from now on we all try and respond to poorly written articles with the same level headedness and wit that's made this community so much fun to be part of.
