Should I get ED for VR?

My question is this:

Is it worth purchasing ED again (for my PC) as well as a HOTAS in order to play ED in VR? If so, has anyone tried with a setup similar to mine?

I have been playing ED on Xbox One for about a year now and have recently picked up a Rift about a week ago. My PC is pretty powerful, and has run every VR game I have thrown at it so far.

Specs:
GTX 1060 6GB
i7-6700K
8GB RAM

From what I have heard, not just on these forums; I'd say yes. I'm saving up for VR myself. There are so many 'Wow! threads here alone, as well as all over YouTube. If you do get VR, be sure to post your thoughts.

Yes, the ED universe is amazing with the Oculus! it give you an unique inmersion feel, and even dizziness, when you go into orbit of a planet or moon. But you get used after a while.

It's great, you can't comprehend how big everything really is until you've seen it in VR. However, any VR video you see on youtube is recorded by the screen resolution and settings, not what you would see in VR.

I've seen alot of people being confused about how blurry the game is in VR, ofcorse this depebds on what hardware you're running. But, look at how your game looks on the screen and just be ok that you'll never achieve the same in VR.

Edit-

Sorry I misread the entire thing, you've already got a VR headset and asking if ED is worth buying for the use of VR.

Yes, I'd say it's worth it.

For me, ED is one of the best uses of VR I've experienced. They've done a great job with it and you really get that feeling of being "in" your ship. It's fantastic.

ED is among the best games, if not THE best game, for VR you can get today. So if your looking for something for your Rift then ED is as good as it gets!

Get a cheap Hotas, or try scoring one even cheaper used, and you have what you need to really enjoy that VR headset :)

Yes, absolutely. I tried E: D with the Vive, and I didn't like it (couldn't read the menus). No such problem with the Rift which I got recently.

My machine is similar to yours, but with a 980Ti and 16Gb. As someone else suggested, download the client and see how the test missions go. I doubt you'll have problems.

I've bought a Rift after the price drop and I'm still looking to collect my jaw. I dropped it somewhere. It's that awesome. I thought I knew this game (been playing it since betas) but it looks SO much better in VR! I won't play it on a screen again unless I've got to.

OP. I saw Elite for the first time a few days ago on a mate's rift. I say "yes". The resolution isn't as good as 1440p or 4K monitor, but as other CMDRs have said, the immersion beats the lower res.

It's the only way I have played it since mid 2014

I`d recommend you try it out first. I have the rift paired with a 1070 and i7 cpu, so plenty of power. I`m thinking of returning it to Amazon, driving games and the SRV are a recipe for VR sickness so I didn`t persist. While immersion is very good while in your ship and the sense of scale excellent, you still have to get past the sde due to the resolution. I think 4k at least is needed plus the GPU to push it, maybe wait for next gen.

Do you like playing a Game or do you like flying a spaceship?

This may sound a tad bit exagerated, but in actuality, it isn't. ED in VR is truly something special. I am a VIVE-Owner almost since release of the vive... But only started playing Elite for about 3 Months now. And haven't played anything else since then.

The GTX 1060 6GB in combination with a i7 6700k should be doing fine.

Do it. You won't regret it. Or, you will regret not having tried it sooner. :p

How can I do that? I downloaded the client, and it wont let me sign in with out purchasing ED. It says "Please purchase/redeem Elite Dangerous to continue".
Isnt there a demo / trial selectable at the bottom left in the launcher? Used to be that way.

edit:
singleplayer combat training?

I think that ED on the PC is far superior in terms of the flexibility in controls and the graphics.

OP your setup sounds a bit down on what most people quote, but if you're not having issues in other VR games, then I don't think you'll have issues with running ED.

I would really see if it can run at highest quality settings at this is where ED shines.

The PC can be upgraded easily if it needs it.

I think you can buy ED in any PC source (Direct from Frontier, Steam or Oculus) and it will just work nicely with Rift. There are many tweaks you can make to improve things, forums are your friend here :).

If you want game to appear in your games list in your Rift launch screen, you might have to download a key as well (I deleted mine .. oops), but it does not cost any more (I'm fairly sure). Either way running ED and selecting HDM from the 3D Graphics Options in ED will fire up in Rift just fine.

Navigation is a dark art, so I'd go with switching from 2D to VR and back as suits, a bit messy, but works fine.
Basically the Galaxy and System maps need work in VR mode.
If you navigate from the side panels you won't have any trouble.

You'll also probably need a Hotas controller as you are blind to the real world, so need to find controls easily and by touch (not the Oculus variety of ... :D )

Anyway OP, good luck.

Once launcher is loaded, there is a list of versions of the game near the bottom.

You might have to scroll down the quite small window to find "Single Player Combat Training" at the the bottom.
This I think, is the free taster version.

Either I downloaded the wrong launcher, or I'm not looking hard enough, but I don't see that option.

This is what I see.
