Sulphur?

Ok so just gone to see my first Engineer and I require Sulphur for an upgrade, can I buy this anywhere or do I have to go and Mine for it, I have my ASPX that I could easily set up for mining if needs be as its sat doing nothing, just seeing if there is a lazy option first, cheers :D

Mining for it is very ineffective. Get onto a planet and surface prospect in a SRV. Just check the planet's materials list tho since not all planets have sulphur on them.

What the gentleman above said. A good way to find it is to go to the system map, the "Info" section on the left hand side will give you a geological breakdown of the planet by percentages (if you've scanned it already) when you select or hover over it. Sulphur is relatively easy to find on planet surfaces. Asteroid mining is a bit hit and miss for stuff like that.

As above but it's also worth checking out the planet the engineers base is on especially if you're at Farseer Inc as off the top of my head you can get it there :)

Yup pretty much what these guys said. Search the planet and learn how to use your scanner to find outcrops and metallic rocks

Basically with the scanner on the SRV the bottom band and bottom middle band are stuff you can mine. The sounds set apart what the crap is. The top middle band is almost always cargo, down satellites, dead SRV's etc. The top band is either ships or buildings.

Yeah if i remember correctly thin bottom line is rock, thick bottom line is outcrop. Thin top line is cargo and full top to bottom is usually a base or a mine. I stick with the bottom bar pips though as thats what i need

Thanks guys, have kitted out my Viper MK4 and have had a few practice surface scouting which has been great fun, have not found any Sulphur yet though. What surface scanner do I need to scan with and what is the routine for scanning, there is no Geo breakdowns in the planet info so I am missing something?? Cheers :)

You need a detail surface scanner equipped on your ship then select the planet while in supercruise. Throttle down to zero and sit there while it scans. Once complete go to the system map and hover over the planet to see a detail materials list.

I have just been on a planet and actually found some Sulphur so I will be off to me Engineer tomorrow and do my first mod which is cool. I will put the detail surface scanner on, do I really need the Advanced Discovery scanner? as I could replace that with the surface scanner. Thanks again :)

Taking off you ADS means stopping at each and every NAV beacon. I'd think twice about that.

You need both. If you port into a system with no nav beacon you'll have to search the void for the planets without an ADS and that'll literally take days.

It's well worth visiting an alien barnacle site and shooting up/harvesting some spires! You can get a wide selection of planet based mats in a virtually unlimited supply ;)

Once again thanks for the input, OK, so here is my Viper MK4 setup. I had the Viper with all the bits on anyway and just put the SRV gear in it so it is probably way over the top but I like the way it handles and I can defend myself if I need too, however, I am still relatively new to all this and although no stupid I am not the smartest when it comes to these setups, so I would be happy for you seasoned ED Commanders to rip the ***** out of my setup and put me straight. I need to put the ADS somewhere too, cheers guys

there is no wrong way to play as long as you have fun with your setup. Depending on what you want to do however, I can make some suggestions on what may help that. I've never had any real use for the AFMU (I've done lots of CZ, bounty hunts and am currently on a long range passenger mission and am carrying one "just in case") but I've never actually had to use one. Typically by the time you need to use one in combat, it's too late and as long as you don't fall asleep at the stick, damaging yourself while exploring is pretty tough. That would free up a utility slot, at which point you could upgrade your shield and put the discovery scanner back in.

other than that, beam weapons look really cool (I make sure to carry one just for looks), but pulse I think are better (and have better mod options imo)

Beams have the outright best DPS and heat generation on target out of the laser weapons but they have the worst everything in terms of power. (EPS, EPD, power & distributor draw)

Pulse have the lowest energy requirements and benefit from rapid fire mods the best.

Burst Lasers are the outright best in terms of damage per energy. So they are the most efficient at using their energy per shot. The also have slightly more DPS than pulse and one interesting good effect, that can be applied, if used right.
