I disabled the camera in my HTC Vive and got a massive improvement

Anyone else experience this?

Yeah it is weird. It seems even when not using it it's still sucking out resources. And people say that you can get tracking issues when camera is enabled. I suspect it boils down to available USB bandwith. From my experience there is no improvement between 30Hz camera and no camera, apart from the QoL of actually having a camera. With 60Hz camera it was outright crashing for me on my i5-3570k and gtx 1070.

Sidenote/musing: It would be cool though if we could tone down the matrix filter a bit to better make out things in the room, like remote or headphones for example.

You mean the front camera? Never even tried it, dont see the point using it in any circumstances, especially when playing Elite.

It is good for those "where did I put my headphones / remote / cellphone" or "where is wife/dog/child" moments without lifting the headset. But this is the only use case for me. It presents 3d world in a 2d way which is extremely weird in VR. Also the matrix effect while cool makes for a very blurry image, and I never did accustom to using the "controller attached" camera view, which is even more weird. In short, its only a nice to have thing for now. If you have digital audio strap then even this becomes irrelevant because putting headset on and off is sooo easy. Too bad it costs an arm and a leg, and TPCast (wireless vive) is even more expensive (350€)...

TL; DR disable cam if its causing you any trouble.
