Absolutely GORGEOUS nebula I discovered....

Until today, my "exploration" has been little more than jumping from star to star, gathering data, and occasionally taking pretty pictures of some gas giant with rings, then returning to the bubble to sell data.

But about 2 weeks ago, while on a long trip, I was searching around for anything interesting in the galaxy map. In particular, I was hoping to find a smallish nebula to explore on the far side of the core, hoping that one farther out like that would have a greater chance of being "virgin", that is to say, untagged.

I couldn't see many on that side, if at all, unlike the near side, which has many, but most are already at least partially tagged.

SO I tried zooming in more, in hopes of finding smaller and smaller nebulae, when I found a little gem. A TINY nebula, with only a neutron star within it. And it was in an....obscure location. One I doubted many, if any at all, would bother to go to. So I bookmarked it. It was a LOOOOONG way out, and I wanted a better fsd first. So after about 2 weeks, I made it back to the bubble, engineered my fsd (got lucky AS ****! Only enough mats for 3 rolls, and I got a VERY good roll on the first attempt), and promptly set out. And boy, did my new fsd get me there QUICK. Only took me about 14 hours of travel time. As I got closer and closer I was getting REALLY excited. Like, I could feel it in my CHEST excited. I just KNEW it would be unexplored. As I got within 10000 Ly of the star, I stopped seeing ANY player discovered tags whatsoever, which only heightened my excitement.

When I finally got there, I was treated with an AMAZING view, and sure enough, I was the first to see it. NOBODY would have just "passed through" THIS system. They would have tagged it for sure. I wont reveal its location just yet (gotta get the data back first). But I will share with you all some beautiful pictures.

Enjoy;

A few hundred Lys out, the nebula appears visible as a hazy blue gem:

The nebula viewed from a neighboring star, less than 50ly away:

I have decided to call it the "Dragonfly Nebula", due to its shape resembling the eyes of a dragonfly...

Today, I finally feel like I am ACTUALLY exploring in this game.

o7 commanders...

*update:
Well, I'm back in bubble, and the cash I got from this expedition earned me enough money and then some to finally buy me my exploraconda, and outfit it. Now it just needs some engineering. And since I safely returned the data, and my name is secured to the system, I will post this little gem's address. Still room for one more name there!

Nicely done Commander. Last time I went out looking for planetary nebulae such as this one I did exactly what you did, jumping through 5k LY and more of completely virgin systems, anticipation building as I get closer.... oh for frak's sake, discovered again! Maybe twenty times, maybe more. I almost did a rage self-destruct at one point. :D

Just made it all the sweeter when I jumped into SPLOJOEA HA-A E6052 with its pair of water worlds and planted my flag.

It's certainly a thing that jump-scoop-honk means you miss a lot. There could be a planetary nebula in system with you but unless you fly away from the star, you'll never see it.

I just arrived right outside yet another nebula. But the game wont let me jump in. FSD is in full repair, I'm already in supercruise, and the destination is less than 2ly away, but when I try to jump the computer just says "cannot comply".

No reason stated, it just tells me "no".

What gives?

Keep an eye in the upper right hand corner of the screen, where all the warnings show up, it should tell you why. Might be that the jump will consume more than the 3 tons max of fuel that you're allowed to consume. That error usually shows up if you have a long range course that you're following, then you take on some cargo that increases your weight, and you haven't accessed the Galaxy Map in awhile to let the computer auto-calc the course corrections for you.

If it's not that, the system might be permit-locked, which means you can't go in, and there's a number of systems outside the Bubble that have unobtainable permits right now. If that's the case though, you shouldn't have been able to set a course to it.

In other words, I have no idea.

2 Ly is not a long distance so allow me a foolish question: when you say you are in supercruise and 2 Ly away, you don't mean that you covered some of the distance in SC, do you? Because if that's the case you cannot jump this way, the game calculates the jump distances between your current system and your target system and does not take into account the distance travelled in supercruise.

Would you happen to have the system name? I wouldn't mind paying this a visit

I will happily release the system name once I am safely back in the bubble, and have sold the data. Unfortunately, I have a field training exercise that starts today and does not end until Friday, and will not be making it back to the bubble until late this weekend, or possibly longer, as I have a few other locations I wanted to visit on the way back.

I WILL tell you however, that the system included one other star, aside from the parent neutron star. I did NOT scan the second star, so there's still room for one more name in the system.

Great post OP! It's all very well going to a known beautiful location like I did recently with the Spirograph nebula but discovering your own ... that's proper exploration!

Well, I'm off to begin my week of field training (I'm a US Army Cavalry Scout....appropriate, no?). Ill be back Friday night, and should be back in the bubble by Monday at the latest, at which time I will post this little gem's address, and the race for the next commander to get there, scan the only other object in system (which I left unscaned), and get back, thereby attaching their name to it can begin.

till then, laters!
