Can We Steal Each Other's Ships?

Can we steal each other's ships? I ask as I am at Dav's Hope right now and there's another ship here. I went to take a closer look at the ship in my SRV and I noticed that my turret withdrew as I got near to it, as if I were approaching my own ship. I can also see the illuminated boarding zone of the other ship. Got me to wondering if it's possible. I was too scared to try it. [haha]

Ahh, no unfortunately you can't take other commanders ships...at least not yet...few years down the road, who knows. :)

dear lord, imagine how awesomely annoying that would be...I can't decide if that would make more people play Open or less?

Funny you ask that as a friend and myself had the same discussion and he informed me that we will be able to leave our ships on stations and board other people's ships and steal them if that's you fancy

No, and robbing core gameplay from players... (ships are core gameplay in Elite), is a stupid idea.

Sorry, but I suspect this is one thing a great many players NEVER want to see.

It would be cool in a way, but only if we had the option to lock our ships down whenever we strayed from the ship to prevent thiefs, such as when in our SRV.

Better to just not let it be possible.

You want to know how serious out-of-game witch-hunts start? This is how that happens. Don't doubt for a moment how seriously people value their in-game property.

No, it isn't. What do you want? To log in and find you have no ship?

Look dude, it might sound cool, but theft in video games never goes down well.

And it would end up with someone being affected in real life. Badly affected. It isn't worth ruining someone's life just so you can get a few "lulz".

Need an example? There are many in EVE... And if you really want this kind of gameplay, EVE is right over there!

I should stress. The person who would be at most risk of out-of-game retaliation is actually the thief, not the victim.

Oh yeah, it would be really cool to be able to steal one anothers ship. It would also be cool that if caught your killed and banned from ever playing agian for life.

there'd have to be a simple insurance related resolution to this + instant bounty on the thief of a high percentage of the full value of the ship for this to even remotely be feasible.

but there would be so many ways to exploit this it'd be impossible to initiate.

Maybe an option for a private server, that way everybody would pretty much be on board for space-pranking?

This isn't me warning about developer actions. I'm talking full-blown witch-hunts that seek to identify an individual's real life identity, and harass them IRL in some twisted revenge.

Anyone who thinks this won't happen is very naive.

It might be something that could be done if you accepted the option in your ship menu, much the same as reporting crimes. But otherwise I agree, the potential for just insane levels of griefing would probably make it a real pain to be implemented universally. But certainly the idea of boarding another ship is something that could be very cool. But it would have to be done right. Maybe space legs first. Though I wouldn't imagine that ever actually comes beyond moving around your own ship.

you seem to think that elite dangerous and eve arnt basically the same thing, your right they arnt , elite is worse than eve when it comes to makeing people sad for the lols , up to 2.4 greifing was promoted by the devs. i know you know deep down, ship stealing will be a great gameplay mechanic if you people like you would just give it the time of day,

looks like you should move to eve if you dont like this kinda game play

So you want to steal a ship you did not work for but somebody else did? never going to happen and that would be the ultimate form of griefing. If you want a ship go out and earn it. What a monumental bad idea of bad ideas. So let's drive more players away just to know all the hard work they put in can be gone in an instant. No one would play

As others have said it'd be a cool element but combined with players would just cause so much conflict and hate that it's probably the last thing we need.

I can already see the "Newbies get rich quick guide" where the advice is all about following players round in your starter sidewinder just to try and steal their ship. Fail? No worries, your sidey is free, try again.

Yeah, I hope this never happens or at the very least is highly restricted and/or insurance to maybe 0.5% or 1% instead of the usual 5% if it's stolen....

I must admit i'd be pretty annoyed if one of my ships were to be stolen whilst out in the SRV, but then again, I leave a very small window of it being unmanned on the surface. That's not to say it couldn't happen!

I think it would be a brilliant game mechanic, if the risk/reward system was balanced correctly.

Want to steal the ship? Cool, have a go. Surely some method of hacking/code breaking must be present to allow a timer to begin and thus notify the ships owner whilst the thief attempts to power the ship up and leave.
If successful and they manage to escape, the bounty needs to be pretty hefty for such a heinous crime, and a flag put on the subscan information saying "stolen."
Big rewards for turning vigilante security I think!
And on the other side of the coin, it open a whole new world up for GTA style respray shops within shady asteroid neighbourhoods to loose your stolen status! haha!

BTW, I am no griefer and I have not once attacked another CMDR, I just love how deep the game is, why not go further?
