Homeworld. Forget Remastered; one of the problems was that they couldn't understand a lot of the programming that made the original so great, particularly combat formations & flying. Remastered is built on Homeworld 2's engine & mechanics, which sucked and were hated pretty much by everyone. If you can't locate the original game, get Remastered because it comes with a copy of the original.
If you want to see a labor of love, with amazing (for it's time) graphics, integrated music (and an original song by Yes over the credits), sound effects and just gorgeous ships & detailing, get Homeworld. It is THE game I used in 1999 to show what wonders PC gaming could do. You owe it to yourself to play it at least once. I replay both the campaign and skirmish modes a couple times a year and never get tired of it.
Oh yeah: if you can find the original game in original packaging, it came with two very detailed and beautiful "technical manuals" full of lore, engineering profiles to wonder over and just plain amazingness in graphic design and love. And I mean old-school manuals, like 50+ pages each...
Another thing: when Homeworld had a major patch, they sent you a hybrid cd with all the original music on it which would play in any cd player, as well as the big patch file. Now that's major love.
