PC Gamer Article "The Best Space Games on PC" - ED Makes An Appearance

ED is the only game on that list I've played, though I also bought Alien Isolation (not installed) and NMS (installed last night but haven't played yet).

Not only that, but when it comes to a subjective medium like games, "best" is definitely subjective.

Have to say though, I almost forgot about Tachyon despite how much I loved that game... also I even named my Cobra "Bora" and I still almost forgot about it.

Don't worry, most people forgot about Tachyon. Novalogic was a military game publisher after all. Dropping a space epic on people was.. weird at least. But hey, at least it's on GOG now :D https://www.gog.com/game/tachyon_the_fringe

And yes, "best" game is a subjective thing, especially when they don't even define a timeframe. The 80ies and the 90ies I'd say produced a lot of pretty good games, but some really went the way of the dodo, and got forgotten no matter how good they are. I mean I doubt many have heard of Nomad for instance, or Lightspeed. Then again, my best list probably would be skewed by having fond memories of the golden era of gaming :D

What's your favourite from the list?

From that list, I really enjoyed Homeworld (1&2) over LAN, have the remastered version sitting on the shelf, gathering dust.
It was Command And Conquer in space, so naturally it got my attention.

Also, have Sins Of A Solar Empire sitting right next to Homeworld Remastered, helping out gathering dust.

I have been meaning to check out Space Engineers, Kerbal, FTL and don't shoot me here but No Mans Sky.
Just too busy with stuff in E: D for now...

There's only a few on that list I haven't played (Valkyrie, Tacoma, and The Dig) but most I've put many hours into. Don't regret them one bit. Space games are the best, imo.

The Dig is an amazing Sci-fi Adventure game! A classic.

I played it many years ago, got stuck near the end, the puzzle is confusing.

Yeah, the Dig actually has a surprisingly high amount of pedigree. I mean.. dialogue by Orson Scott Card, story by Spielberg ;)

Red Faction?...

What?! It's on Mars.

Homeworld. Forget Remastered; one of the problems was that they couldn't understand a lot of the programming that made the original so great, particularly combat formations & flying. Remastered is built on Homeworld 2's engine & mechanics, which sucked and were hated pretty much by everyone. If you can't locate the original game, get Remastered because it comes with a copy of the original.

If you want to see a labor of love, with amazing (for it's time) graphics, integrated music (and an original song by Yes over the credits), sound effects and just gorgeous ships & detailing, get Homeworld. It is THE game I used in 1999 to show what wonders PC gaming could do. You owe it to yourself to play it at least once. I replay both the campaign and skirmish modes a couple times a year and never get tired of it.

Oh yeah: if you can find the original game in original packaging, it came with two very detailed and beautiful "technical manuals" full of lore, engineering profiles to wonder over and just plain amazingness in graphic design and love. And I mean old-school manuals, like 50+ pages each...

Another thing: when Homeworld had a major patch, they sent you a hybrid cd with all the original music on it which would play in any cd player, as well as the big patch file. Now that's major love.

About FTL.
What I think FTL really lacks is some kind of infinite play mode.
And I really hate that final level. I just can't be bothered by that kind of boss gameplay. I hate that in every game no matter the genre.

THANK GODS! I thought I was alone in that.
Love love love the game but that last level... :(

Not sure what's with EVE Valkyrie on that list. It's nothing special in VR. Elite is still king in that department.

Good list otherwise, except for the lack of X games.

Bizarre that the X games didn't get a mention, but other than that, a good list. I now have "The Dig" on my wishlist.

Alien: Isolation doesn't belong on that list though. The whole point (and charm) of the game is its claustrophobic and constrained nature. It's the very antithesis of 'space'. Could have been set in an office block and nobody would have known any different.

Freelancer 1 and 2 (especially 1) had some cracking storylines to go with top notch dogfighting. The ONLY thing that let them down was the abysmal AI - especially your wingmen who were so fragile and useless, that more often than hot - especially in the final missions - you seemed to always end up on your own.

If only we could have a Freespace 3, with up to date visuals, and some properly written AI... but keep the basic gameplay from FS2...

... that's what Squadron 42 was supposed to be.. but now.. it isn't... (ever :D ).

I have 350 hours in ED.
250 in NMS.
~100 in FTL
60 in Everspace.

I plan on getting SC as well. Just waiting for the anniversary sale.

Got some odd ones in there for sure so not really sure what the space nerd accreditation is for the author - I would consider them an amateur space pc gaming nerd - 4 out of 10 at best, and that's only because they included Tie Fighter which was awesome sauce.

For me how you can have a list without any of the GalCiv games is a mystery, in fact the list is terrible imo.

So I would think you would need in no particular order:

- Freelancer
- X2
- X3 (all variants great up to Albion Prelude, rebirth was 'eeeek' - never pre-ordering again, well ok I did for TW:WH2, but hey dont shoot me)
- Original SW: Empires at war back in the 90s - it was great and better than new version - probably had a different name though.
- Imperium Galactica 1 & 2 (loved both)
- Probably MOO (but since never played it myself but heard how good it's likely it is pretty good - also means my nerd rating goes down at least 2 points)
- Umm GalCiv 1-3 - how is that not on there?
- Star Citizen - oh wait... no...

You sir, need a history lesson.

Maze War, 1973, was the grandsire of the FPS genre. Wolfenstein 3d gave us the FPS gore in 1992, and was the predecessor to Doom, which ultimately redefined the genre, and is the game most are familiar with these days.

Ah, the memories!

I still ritually install Wolfenstein 3D, Doom and Quake on every computer I own.

I see they have some old titles on the list. But to my surprise NO Starcontrol 2 ?!! The best game of all time.
