PC Gamer Article "The Best Space Games on PC" - ED Makes An Appearance

So many titles in there leave me scratching my head.

Apart from the obscure titles I've never heard of like Event[0] and Dusk, what exactly does Mass effect have to do in this list? It's only vaguely spacey related, the core of the gameplay is planetbound. And how can they mention the watered down Empire at war without listing Star Wars Rebellion? What exactly makes EVE Valkyrie, a shallow arcade shooter whose only selling point is VR, worthy of a mention amongst the "best space games" ? No Man's Sky? Really? I'm not a hater of the devs as I skipped all the drama and just bought a game I enjoy after watching videos of it, but surely it still has a ways to go. And... Stellaris? Anybody who's bought a strategy/GS game developped by Paradox in the last ten years knows their MO: release a shallow mess and incrementally improve it over the span of several years until it reaches critical mass and turns into a black hole sucking in all your free time. Stellaris is just over one year old, by PI standards it means it's still a mess and it's still shallow. There still are better modern 4x that are just as accessible, like Endless Space and Star Ruler 2.

It's not like they were afraid of adding old titles, they gave Privateer and TIE fighter the thumbs up, so one has to wonder where the hell are Freespace 2, I-war, Freelancer, Nexus the Jupiter Incident? Nothing has dethroned them yet in the space themed game category, so making a list called "the best space games on PC", with no further qualifiers, and omitting them is certainly weird.

I guess TL;DR is, PC gamer is still utter tosh. Well, at least they got KSP right.

Yes, Eve Valkyrie left me wondering too. I'd sooner put X-Com Interceptor on that list or something truly obscure like Renegade: Battle for Jacobs Star, than Valkyrie.

Sins of a solar empire.( there is a very very good Star Trek mod for this)

Where were you a year ago when I was searching for something with a bit more depth than Birth of the Federation and installed this, but never got around to trying it out. Where were you the other day when I uninstalled it, hm? HM?? Now I have to install it again! And I blame you for that. :p

P.S. Aside from that, the list is completely and UTTERLY worthless, due to missing X3.

I remember being very impressed with System Shock 2.

It's less a 'space game' and more a FPS game 'set in space', but then so are a couple of games on that list.

I'm still hiding in a locker in Alien Isolation but that's not my choice ....

It missed the list also but is still being played today (and I still have mt copy). Chris Roberts had a hand in it but surprisingly it was Microsoft that finally got it out the door.

Speaking of Chris Roberts I noticed Star Citizen didn't make the list either. But it isn't finished yet is it.

The original Privateer was masterful in its time. I absolutely loved that game.

Sins is my favorite RTS by far.

ED is great--would love it to be so much more, but then, who wouldn't?

Duskers is g awesome, but I only have managed to play it in small doses to date. I'm looking at you, Elite.

You too, huh? Beautiful game, but dang that Xenomorph knows my location a little too well. :D

there is only 2 I have played on that list. mass effect 2 (I wouldn't class it as a space sim) though my mem is bad I could be confusing it with another.
there is only ONE that I like/love to play. 4th I would have put it at the top ;)

NO FREESPACE 2!?? :O

Possibly the most intense space combat game ever made. Massive battles between warships the size of cities, and you're in a one man fighter zipping between them as they lash out with enormo-death beams. The campaign just never lets up. It's not about being the hero, but just managing to survive against the odds. It might be getting on a bit, but the FS2Open community has kept the graphics looking up to date and have created loads of add-on campaigns.

I enjoyed Tachyon: The Fringe from back around the early 2000s. Picked it back up on Steam and got it working again not all that long ago, as a matter of fact. I really liked the "flight" mechanics in it and the narrator/protagonist is a bit of a hoot.

Yeah Tachyon the fringe was a great space combat game.

Personally my favourite, that's not on the list and gives Elite a bit of a run for its money:

Edge of chaos: Independence war 2

What a game.:)

I own most of the games on the list. My favorites:

- Kerbal Space Program
- FTL
- Starbound
- Tie Fighter
- Space Engine (though not truly a "game")

Elite Dangerous has the potential to be the best space game of all time, it just isn't there yet. Frontier needs to focus more on core mechanics and less on features for the marketing department, which hopefully is what Season 3 will be about. A game without good gameplay is not a great game.

One game missing from that though is Freespace 2, which is IMHO one of the best space combat games ever made even to this day.

Some very very good games on this list, as well as our beloved ED -

The Best Space Games on PC

Other than Elite:Dangerous, I can heartily recommend Space Engineers, Stellaris and FTL. What's your favourite from the list?

That is quite a selection of widely disparate games in that article all thrown on one heap.

FTL was great fun.

I am a huge fan of the Homeworld games.
The ship design of those games is so incredibly good. There is no other game that comes close. I could dream for hours on end just watching the beautiful ships move around space.
I hope we will see a new Homeworld space RTS someday.

I am a fan of the first 3 Mass Effect games, but would never classify them as space games.

No Man's Sky I will buy eventually, but not yet. The game is heading in the right direction, finally.

The Tie fighter and X-Wing games are awesome. Hard to believe that the incredible Star Wars IP has also produced so much garbage in gaming.
I loved creating my own Star Wars stories with the mission editors.
I still have all these games in their original boxes, and I bought them again on GOG.

Wing Commander Privateer 1 and 2 were very enjoyable too.

Space Engine is impressive, but I do not consider it a game.

Games like Elite will always appear in these lists because the genre is so small. ED is probably up there, but it cannot compete with the likes of Eve etc until more depth is added to whats already there. Luckily; that seems to be their plan after Goids make an appearance.

it depends what you want tho right?

Elite, even on its worst day is better than EVE will ever be for me.... and this is not me being a white knight or what ever the derogatory term is in fad these days, i have my concerns about features not in ED... but EVE..... I cant think of anything worse than entering the player run mess that is that game ***. the less other random players can directly affect my game the better so on this EVE fails at the 1st hurdle... for me!.

Players have shown countless times that they on the whole have an inability to role play properly. well made npcs are far better at this as an npc does not need to be "entertained" they do what they are programmed to do.

*** ah i can... DOTA2 I think i would rather play EVE than dota 2.

(which is not to say they are bad games... just that they cater to players with different interests than I. )
