Unblock me!

Dear FDEV,

In the past, I have blocked other players on XBOX LIVE, for SOCIAL issues: perhaps I found them annoying. Perhaps I received unwanted messages from them. Perhaps I simply didn't want them jumping into my party without an invitation.

Regardless, If I had known that this so adversely affect my experience in Elite Dangerous, I NEVER would have blocked ANYONE.

Here's the thing: I want my gaming experience pure. I don't want to cause instancing problems for myself or for other players.

I recently tried to protect my wingman from someone ON MY FRIENDS' LIST who was attacking him, but I could not, because the attacker was invisible to me.

NO, HE WAS NOT SILENT-RUNNING.

This is just an example of one of the problems related to BLOCKED players

This system does NOT work, because it can be abused or can backfire.

Perhaps it was a "regular" instancing error. If that's the case, I hope this kind of error is receiving the urgent treatment that it needs.

However, if this happened because of my own actions, I want to do everything I can to remedy this.

If there is some way you can UNBLOCK everyone I may have BLOCKED in the past, please do so.

If I need to block someone because of social reasons, this should not affect gameplay, but that's my opinion. (AS IF PRIVATE GROUP / SOLO PLAY / MOBIUS isn't already safe-enough-space).

To be clear, if someone wants to block me, I'm not complaining. However, I must say that if a "MURDERHOBO" wants to pick on noobs and they can just block anyone who fights back, that's pretty messed up. Anyway, I just want a clean slate regarding my own blockages. I've already unblocked a few players, but I don't know if it's working.

Thank you.

Sounds like an instancing thing, dog.

Weird crap happens in this game all the time.

My favorite is when two people drop in, but only clones of their ship that travel in a straight line spawn, so each player is like 'hey, get back here!'

Yeah, that sounds like broken instancing. It happens to us all the time during big wing fights. Deinstancing, not seeing the fourth person in a wing, not seeing wing members, all normal.

Game is just broken.

Pretty sure that's just how blocking works on Xbox live, it is nothing to do with FDev. You won't see the players ship or comms even if you share the same instance. Similar thing happened to myself, but I was able to unblock the player in question quick enough to help. You can go through your friends list to "blocked players" and unblock whoever you like, or search up their gamer tag directly.

Edit: It may not be working as intended either, could just be buggy like others mentioned.

i like the block feature of xbox live , it separates the idiots from the players who actually wanna play the game as intended ! you cant have it both ways .

What you described is an instancing error. Happens quite often. Usually jumping out and back in helps. When it happens to me I nav-lock someone in the battle, low wake and drop right back in and I can see the, once "invisible", pilot again. Also, FDev have nothing to do with who you've blocked. That's a Microsoft thing.

I never block anyone. There is always an endless supply of idiots online. If I don't want to interact with someone, I ignore or mute em.

Mute is prob a better action. I edited my block list as a similar experience occurred in another game online. It's interesting to read other players have issues too tho so not sure if it's a result of block or not but mute is best. Glad the OP noticed the block list to unblock folks

IDK how it works on XBox, but on PC the blocking is in game. Even if they do it differently by tapping into XBox own API, they should still present the list of blocked users as it is available on the PC. I may be mistaken though.

That is pretty much how to go about it. You can block someone who harnesses you or bothers you, and ten more of the same will show up the next day. I know it sounds like "old hat", but ignoring the fool(s) will make them walk away for one simple reason....they get bored.

the problem with doing this though is there are certain trollish players that join games to specifically ruin the experience for everyone. Ignoring these people isnt enough because they will continue to show up in your matches.

I have over 1,100+ gamertags blocked in my list and that's where they shall stay. I'd say 99% of 'em were kitchen kinects and to that I say good riddance.

Sorry to bother you, but I wanted to ask what exactly is a "kitchen kinect"?

It's when an Xbox Kinect that sounds like it has been set up in a kitchen and is being used as a mic. Basically people who've just hooked it up, never setting it up properly and then never use it/forget that it's picking up every noise within their house.

No, No, No

You already took the red pill, There's no coming back from it now my friend.
Hmm.. so your saying I can have you on my friend's list, block you, and terrorize yer wingmates? Priceless!!!

You don't even need to have them on your friends list actually.

That kind of behaviour will only end up making things worse for you though. You might get a couple of good laughs out of it, if you are the sadistic type, but eventually all the people that block, ignore, mute and file complaints about you will add up. You will be investigated by Xbox live and in the worst cases possibly banned from playing online. Xbox live takes harassment very seriously, and they are extremely tough on people being found abusing the block and rep system.

At the least you will earn yourself an "Avoid me" rep, so when you do play online your matchmaking will be prioritised to match with other like minded individuals.

That's not even going into FDevs own policies on harassment, which you would also be in violation of if you did what you suggested.

But, blaze your own trail and all that. It's your choice how you play the game. If you choose to violate the CoC and ToU just be grown up enough to wear the consequences when they inevitably come.

^^^ im not breaking any policies as you suggest that i suggested....
but thanks for the brotherly advice / lecture... point taken
