Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club presents The Lion's Back (2 - 10 September 3303)

Could I quickly hijack the thread please (sorry)? But I do have a question for the fellow Adder pilots. Does anyone else get the Adder's engines/thrusters making ridiculously loud noises (especially when put under stress) when in station/outpost instances? It annoys me immensely, especially as it's so loud, but I don't know if it's just me? I created a bug report, if it happens to you could you please reply there (ideally with evidence). The report has a video to show what I mean.
Sorry, no. Closest I come is this:

Weird noises, but no loud weird noises.

Weird noises and robots getting up to whatever they're getting up to :p I can handle, just the audio department being awesome again with every ship having it's own unique sounds. It's just when it spikes so loudly (like in the video) and only in station instances, it doesn't feel right.

This will seem obvious, but I thought I'd put together a diagram for navigating a RES at Regulus 1.

Well, that was a better session this evening. I managed to knock 1:20 off my time. I still won't be challenging the top 3/4 of the leaderboard as it stands :D but I was pleased with the improvement.

And a short video of CMDR Ikaru Sulu coming in to dock at the end of a run (I presume)

Run completed. The time wasn't awful, given the not-exactly-a-racing-build, how little seat time I have in the Clipper (and she's the only Large ship I've ever flown!), and my overall lack of practice flying lately.

Video is processing, I'll submit it when it's done.

there's a thick and thin part? Things I never knew.

It's a planetary ring, so it's very wide and not very thick. Your drop-out point is (a bit short of) where your trajectory would enter the ring. If you approach perpendicularly, you'll be closer to the marker when you drop out, and if you stay on that course you'll get to the edge faster when leaving (and thus escape mass lock sooner).

There are two rings around Regulus 1.

The inner, metallic ring is thinner than the outer, rocky ring. So try not to pick a RES in the outer ring. Discovered through trial and error, but I bet the math holds up if you calculate the area of both rings, assume that metallic asteroids are twice as dense as rocky ones, and then use that in combination with each rings 'mass to calculate the height of their hollow cylinders.

That's it for me, no more attempts can be made in the remaining <2 hours. Thanks for the race, drakhyr! I love that we're exploring all the new possibilities associated with having a clock in the HUD.

You know that there's another day yet don't you? :p

Wait, did you mean in the remaining <2+24 hours?

I also have to test that thick/thin tip about the ring, it looks like everything but obvious ;) (and would also explain the 5-7 km drop-outs compared to the 2-3 km ones).

I should be able to do some "testing" tomorrow, after having been away the last couple days...just yesterday I was enjoying the sun and a gentle wind while reading a book on a quiet seaside, a few hours later and I'm back in the dull city, overcast, 15 °C and intermittent rain...I'll need some more hours to recover from the trauma, trying to improve my times could be a good enough distraction.

So, the board update as we enter the final day of racing...

In Regulation Adder, Cmdr Ozric finally makes a valid appearance in Slackbladder, suffering from a poor resource extraction site dropout to leave him near the bottom of the board with a time of 21:41. A short way behind, Cmdr Jintosh has made a further run; while Rose Raiona may still be propping up the bottom of the board for now, she's gathering speed with an improvement of more than three minutes on her previous best.

In Open Unlimited, we start by welcoming two new entrants to the event. Firstly, Cmdr Edward Robinson makes his Buckyball debut (welcome!) in the Imperial Courier Dirty Deeds Done Cheap. With fairly steady progress (and, I suspect, having missed the "in any order" bit of the rules), Cmdr Edward Robinson slots in towards the bottom of the board with a time of a little under 24 minutes. A little further up the board, Cmdr jumpingclear has arrived in the Orca Whale of a Time, a steady run giving him a solid mid-table position with a time of just over sixteen and a half minutes.

Further up, we have a bit of a tussle going on. Cmdr Ikaru Sulu, having yesterday switched from the Asp to the Diamondback Explorer Princess Emily III, made further gains to achieve a time of 14:16. This would have succeeded in putting Sulu ahead of his friend and wingmate Cmdr ZX Spectrum, except that ZX Spectrum has also switched to the DBX and improved, with Down to Earth IV achieving a time of 14:03. This was closing in on Cmdr Raiko; but Raiko himself has made further improvements, with his performance in The Nomad proving that the Asp Explorer is certainly capable of keeping up with the Diamondbacks, as Raiko's new time of 13:35 puts him within sniffing distance of the podium.

Will Cmdrs Bruski or Jak managed to find that few extra seconds to get past Cmdr Aken B.? Will one or more of the chasing pack find a burst of speed? How many racers can improve their times during the final day? And where's Cookiehole?

All is set for a nailbiting final day's racing; tune in tomorrow to find out the results!

EDIT: FYI, an entry has been received from Cmdr Timothy Knight (Rankaze), but isn't on the board yet awaiting resolution of a technical issue with the race evidence.

Last time I checked, I couldn't hear any muffled sound coming from the trunk anymore. He's either still firmly secured in the back of the Happy-Go-Bucky...or the cookiebots found a way to sneak him out [where is it]...

After the pain that was uploading my last run's video, I was wondering if taking screenshots from a video of a run would be ok?

(What really annoyed me yesterday was being on what looked like being a sub-22 minute run (yeah, still slow<g>) and then managing to hit the rings approaching Elgin...)

Ah, I can explain that.

...
.....

Oooo look, a supernova! (runs away).

Seriously though, just about to try again afer tweaking Shadowplay settings to bump video size down a bit (took nearly an hour just to upload last time). I'll also try to submit a legal entry for Regulation Adder as well sometime today.

o7 all and fly Dangeous!
