Galaxy Map visibility

I like to use the Stars Visited/Not Visited Filter on the Galaxy Map most of the time to see where I've been and where I'm heading next. However, I find the number of stars shown at a time rather limiting, a sphere of maybe a few hundred stars around where I'm focused. Is there any way to increase the number of stars that can be seen at once?

If not, I think FD should include a Galaxy Map rendering slider so those of us with more powerful GPUs can take advantage of their hardware and see further afield on the map instead of limiting everyone to a fixed number by default. I mean, they're only red/blue spots in a static background, not complex animated graphics... I think the current setup really underestimates what modern GPUs are capable of handling and could do with a boost and optional settings.

Cheers.

Currently there is no way to increase the sphere of stars.
It was introduced (I believe) because in certain regions of the galaxy the number of stars are great and there were real performance problems.
That said, a setting would be good to vary this.

In 2.4 there is a new feature that does show the route you have been.

Elpapo is right, it does massively increase galmap load time.

In the graphicsconfiguration.xml there is a galaxy map section. Bumping up the line that says "Star Instance Count" will bump up the stars shown at a time. I have mine on high settings set to 4000 as for my specific PC I don't notice the impact too much. Although I know others have it much higher.

There's a few other bits you can tweak in there but beware some of it will mess your game up so take a copy of the file before editing.

Nope, thats wrong. There is a way. U can do it by editing GraphicsConfiguration.xml that is within game directory.

When I say "no way" I generally mean "in game" – I tend to believe that if something is worth configuring then it should be accessible in the game menu settings options.

As accustomed as I am to tweaking configuration files, it can be too advanced for some people, particularly if there is no tutorial on what cvars are available in ED to tweak.

I agree and made this suggestion: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php/265501-Graphical-Options-for-High-Res-Nebula

I still find it disappointing that the Ultra / Highest settings is not the highest the game can run graphically. I want to max everything and watch my pc melt and dial back things until the melting is acceptable. Its what made Crysis great in the day because hardly anyone in the world could max it out and play it without insane instability :p

Well I've just put my Stars count up to 10,000 and it didn't slow it down by even a second, FPS remained at 60.

So I then bumped it up to 100,000. The Galmap still opens instantly, FPS has halved and jitters between 25–35, which is not a big deal since it's only a map, and when I zoom out the stars can be seen rendering high above and below the center point, although it only takes a second and zoomed out is useless anyway for plotting.

I think I'll set it at 20,000 or 25,000 because that's all I really wanted, more but not over-the-top.

I'm using a GTX 960 with a slight OC, but I think that the default numbers in the config files are cynical for all low/medium/high settings. FD should conduct some GPU tests and punch in some realistic numbers to improve everyone's map scope.

Add a new tab with a list showing all the stars visited and when.
Clicking on the star takes you there.

Problem sorted.
You're welcome, Frontier.

That, to me, is the problem.
Providing a tab with all visited stars fixes that problem.
You can still see all the stars you have visited at once; but albeit in a different way. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I guess it's just the way we think and approach things differently .. I never use the visited/not visited filter and prefer things in a list form for easy navigation. xD

I think you're missing the point. Go try the filter. You'll see a sphere of red/blue markers. Just having a text-based list saying where you've been before wouldn't do anything on its own. It's being able to know where you haven't been as well that's important, which could be useful for data gathering missions or planning routes. But the problem is (was) that the number of stars shown by the filter does not show far enough without moving around, maybe 30-40ly at most was shown around the centre point.
