OMG - Thargoid Cinematic was ACE!

I am aware. However this isn't 1984. Winter is coming. :)

Coming back to current events though, I assume that they can 'see' in Witchspace the same way we can see in SC. Which means if you get there first you're probably safe, since you're ahead of them.

Maybe.

Maybe.

They travel in witchspace still, as far as we know? (same old-skool method as capital ships use); we have a more modern 'quicker' but shorter range jump, via hyper-space in the playable ships. So they travel over distances we can't, and can fiddle with us whilst we do. That, uh, does give them a little bit of a tactical advantage.

Hold on a minute... The targeted Thargoid ship reads on the HUD as 10,140m away. Why? That's always rendered in kilometres in the game... Why render it in metres? I don't understand why that's different at all.

I think it is down to it being a cinematic, none of it was in game rendering, so the animators didn't copy it exactly.

C3PO says it best...

Ohhhhh, and I am still somewhere out in the Formidine Rift at the edge of the galaxy. In two minds now if I should return or not. :D
Epic. :)

On another note, I thought I remembered the dev's a long time ago saying something along the lines of "If we put Thargoids in the game, we won't tell you, it will be much more exciting if commanders discover them on their own." So I guess that didn't happen since we know for a fact that they're putting them in the game now, and it will surprise no one at this point.

They didn't tell us though. The UA, UP & flower ship where player discoveries. The Barnicles where first seen in a trailer but we had no clue they were related until the first flower ship was seen harvesting from them. It wasn't until the 2.4 The Return was annouced that they confirmed it was the Thargoids.

Indeed. For something like 18 months. You can follow the threads back.

The latest is thread 10 but Soontil Relics (thread 1) began on 28/04/2015.

Go and watch the stream as and when it becomes availble.

But the cinemtic teaser was amazing.

We are in for a fight to say the least!

[woah]

I'll wait to see if the gameplay depth and content matches up before buying my ticket to the hype train... On previous journeys it's dropped me off no where near where I expected!

Note: Still waiting for the gameplay this video (from four years ago basically to the day) suggested we'd get... - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VE8B4KptyVI

According to Premonition... Somewhere in the 40s.

Anyway, great cinematic! I really enjoyed watching it and I'm looking forward to what the Thargoids are going to bring to the table, but if I've gotta be critical (and believe me, I've gotta be critical) there was a lot in that trailer that just does not tally with the game as we will presumably find it in 2.4:

- Hair in the cockpit hanging down as if there were artificial gravity, despite us being told there's no artificial gravity in the Elite universe.
- A Wing of 5, despite us only being allowed a max of 4 in the game.
- Multi-Crew working alongside Wings, which is very much not in the game, and as I recall, something FD were vehemently against.
- Scanning for bio-signs, very soft SF concept, definitely not in the game, and not in the spirit of the game either. Would it not have been better to read it as "hull integrity" rather than "bio-signs"?
- Multi-Crew being far more interesting than it is in the game - the helm playing an actual command role rather than that of pilot (because why order evasive manoeuvres when you're the pilot? I suppose you could argue it's for the sake of the Wing, though).
- Very different HUD readout for the Thargoid Interceptor - no hull and shield data for the Helm?

I dunno, I'd be very surprised and delighted if these things actually made it into the game for us players for 2.4, but they sound like things that would definitely have been in the beta for extensive network testing (especially the Multi-Crew/Wings interplay), so I'm actually a little disappointed that the team who made the trailer didn't stick closely to what the game is actually like.

Otherwise, it stands quite well as a trailer on its own.

Eh, a few weeks ago they showed a pilot standing next to his seat in a ship's cockpit. I don't think the company that FDev hires to make their videos has actually played the game.

Bit off topic. I think we're talking about this new cinematic ..

Forget that you can co-ordinate attacks in game, like you can in the video quoted (forget that attacking a ship - even a capital one, without some reason - isn't exactly in-depth gamelay, either even) .. the difference in the quality of the two films is both striking and shows excellent progress I'd say .. 10/10 FDev.

Key thing about that earlier video.. "part of the composer selection process"

That was never suggested gameplay, it was designed as an extreme for auditions. Not designed (primarily, at least) to be seen by public eyes. That'd be like complaining about actors performing lines that weren't in the film...

Back on topic - I love this cinematic. It's not gameplay, it's a trailer.

That sound the Thargoid ship makes.. *shivers*

It reminds me a bit of this when the Thargoids attack.

Awesome Job FDev, I jumped out of my seat when I they started speaking. And with a name like "Commander Chronicles" I suspect this won't be the last of cinematic shorts, it does sounds like a series name sooooo. I'm looking forward to more shorts.

Most wars of conquest are over resources, no matter what dogma is promoted. The Thargoids are/were targeting ammonia worlds. Would we really need to compete with them? Are ammonia worlds useful to humans?

Of course are ammonia worlds essential for the human race! Ammonia chloride is needed for salt liquorice, which is functional food without mankind won't survive..

It's just an advert for 2.4, the actual gameplay will have no reflection on the advert.

Remember how all the other adverts have been.
