in the novella The Dark Wheel, they get caught smuggling tharglets - the story hints they can be trained as mercs.

Used to be, the mothership would launch the little ones who would attack ya but, if you evaded them and concentrated on the mothership, as soon as it blew, the Tharglets went still and you could scoop them up and sell them for big dosh.
The drones were thargons not tharglets.
maybe there was an error in my manual then, for they were called tharglets in game. the smuggled immature tharglets in the story were the only encounter they had.
Maybe. I have a pdf copy of the BBC manual, but it's on my PC. I'll look it up in the morning if nobody else has put the point to sleep by then.

Tharglet is the juvernile(parasitte) form of Thargoid, as described in the Dark Wheel.
Thargon is the smal drone ship, that goes passive when the mothership dies.
Thargons may be flown by Tharglets, but we don't know if that is the case.
Adopting a baby Thargoid, means hosting it in your body.
