General / Off-Topic How come no one has.........

Developed a game like E.D set in that certain galaxy far far away?

though off topic it's also very on topic. E.D is set in our galaxy and is blazing the trail on open sandbox space games. A lot has been said about how it's a niche genre game but the pure unadulterated success of Star Wars franchise (never mind anything else space wise) would tend to out the lie to that statement.

So if the demand is there for games set in that galaxy (there's hundreds of them out there, mostly garbage yeah but there's hundreds) the question is how come no one has done in the Star Wars galaxy what frontier are doing in our own?

The follow on question being would you play it?
and
would you suggest a Frontier/ Star Wars collaboration once Frontier have gotten the present model built to their satisfaction?

Not that I'm implying anything, but a game like ED(or any sim-like game) would totally go over a head of a typical SW fan. Star Wars is a soap opera first, and only after that a fantasy/sci-fi saga. That's why RPGs worked well for the franchise so far.

I would agree with that, however the mechanics of a free roaming world, where you can do stuff a-la sandbox could maybe sell,
on the other hand people like to be the hero and play as a character so it will need to be very guided.

So you don't think E.D set in Star Wars would be successful?
And
you wouldn't like to be able to do everything we can do in E.D but in the Star Wars galaxy?

the rpg stuff is ten a penny in Star Wars and I think you do Star Wars fans a great in justice by suggesting that's all they are capable of playing or wish to play. As was elite in my yoof then Star Wars was a huge factor in igniting my interest in all things space. The ability to actually fly the galaxy as my own Han Solo sorry but oh my giddy aunt yes please. Il admit I've fancied myself as him when smuggling on ED I'd challenge you not to.

No chance.

1. Star Wars is this Empire/Rebels thing. The idea of carving out a life trading, mining, bounty hunting etc doesn't work at all.

2. Star Wars is about centralized characters, destiny, the force etc, as Lysander said. In the Elite universe you're a speck among many. That's weirdly compelling.

3. Star Wars lends itself to big glorious set-pieces, whether in the movies, games, comics, books, or whatever. Great big glorious battles for the fate of the whatever are Star Warsy. Booting up to do some trading to buy your FDL a new beam laser doesn't have a good Star Wars analog.

The central issue is that games like Elite are science fiction. Star Wars really isn't, it's much closer to fantasy, or science fantasy if you will.

Well tbh Star Wars Galaxies with Jump to Lightspeed did offer something like that, but alas, that games is defunct. You had your space sim with similar controls to X-Wing or Tie-Fighter, and your choice of career. It was not mandatory to join either the Rebel Alliance or the Empire, you could just be a freelance smuggler. Oh and it also had multicrew capable ships.
